BINGO.
I've learned several new things from each challenge I've entered. For example, for the abstract food challenge, I found out that it can be tricky to backlight something without reflections and without showing the light in the frame. In the end, it was a so-so score, but several people left comments that they liked it, so I connected with at least someone!
On this one, I learned more things about light, including setting up my first light tent and trying my first snoot (rolled up paper to direct a flashlight more precisely).
Just keep learning and exploring, and let the scores fall where they may.

Well. I think this is my best entry thus far, certainly the most artistic I've ever done.

By far my best, so I can't complain, but I hoped this picture would rest in the 6's after its start. My previous challenges were aweful. Maybe a windfall of voting will drop me in the top 10 with all the Gold-haters out there :). |

I have a question.... I voted an image a 4 because I just didn't like it, at all.... Is that wrong? It is a good shot, it however does not appeal to me at all...

That is the best reason to vote the way you do!
All of the other technical "formulas" people use seem so cold and, frankly, are no more foolproof in providing fairness than anything else.
Honest emotion is what photography is all about.

Well, you should consider making allowances for the shot if it is technically "perfect", but no, if it is something completely distasteful to you by all means, vote your mind.
I personally vote almost anything dealing with murder or suicide a 1, maybe 3 if it's a well done pic of that subject.
If they had a murder/suicide/goth challenge, I'd just have to not vote on that one.

4 is generally as low as I will go for a technically good shot that doesn't appeal to me at all and doesn't seem to me anything more than an exercise in photography.
