How about we ALL take shots of the water drops refracting the image behind them, then we can all get it out of our systems?

More seriously, is there a point where this is going to become such a cliche here that people really vote it down?

i dont think anything should be voted down due to whether it is cliche .... you should be looking at the technical aspects as well ... not whether it's a flower or pet or landscape ...

I took this pic just to see whether i could do it following the tutorial by the great jmsetzler. I couldn`t think of anything to use so i thought i`d try a British version.
I would never have entered this one in for a challenge as it`s a blatant copy of the great one`s photo. I hope he`s not offended.

hey i like my photo! john wasn't the first to do that, and those shots are far less cliche than other shots on this website. i myself won't be entering another water drop shot in a challenge, but there's no point in discounting someone's photo even if it's well done just because it's a copy of another idea.

Thats beautiful marbo, i don't think it should be considered cliche...everyone has different views and artistic talents...so why should it be voted down just because its been done before?

Also, John wasn't the first one to try the waterdrop effect as he has stated in his tutorial.

Thanks but 95% of this pic is down to the Great one.

I liked it too, and I was hoping it would get a ribbon! Sure its been done, but I thought you handled the technique VERY WELL. And it was a very appropriate shot for the challenge.

Hmm, cliche. The first time I saw the technique used was in john's shot: I had the ususal reaction - i.e. wow.

Now, my reaction is 'oh, another one of those shots'.

So i vote a little lower on those images: because it doesn't have the impact that I'm looking for in a really good photo, not any more.

And whilst imitation in many ways is the sincerest form of flattery, in this case I'm finding that it's distracting from my appreciation of John's shot.

BTW, this isn't a serious challenge suggestion.

Ed

PS. And of course, everyone has a right to take an exhibit such a shot. But I have a right to lose interest too.

I feel for achiral because if it wasn`t for the two 1`s he got he would of had a 3rd place ribbon instead of me.
Well ok maybe i don`t feel to bad, lol but i hope the 2 people who gave 1`s feel bad.

Why do people get the impression that this has been done to death? Am I missing the millions of water drop shots or something? I reckon it's been done here 4 or 5 times.

When I tried it the first comment I got was "this technique has been reused far too often". My immediate reaction was "oh, unlike the 'plonk something on a desk and shoot it' technique which has hardly been used at all?".

Just because someone has done it before doesn't mean that everybody else is excluded. We're all still shooting flowers/mountains/sunsets/pets/kids/stuff plonked on desks after all - have they not all been done to death too?

If that were the case bod, then you'd be able to take this seriously as a challenge suggestion. It's a trick, effectively. Sunsets etc. are not a trick, they're a subject.

there has to be less than 10 on this site that are water droplet shots. and yes the people that gave me 1's, i don't understand why but it's cool

As a challenge I would find it too restricting (plus I've had my go at it ; ) ), though I'm sure there would be plenty of attempts if the challenge was 'Water' or even 'Refraction'.
As for it being a trick, so what? John's, Josh's and my own shots are all very different.

Josh, don't feel too bad about 2 1's, Liberty & Justice got 7!!!

Well, at least it is more original than someone downloading your previous weeks entry and submitting it in the following week.

The waterdrop style of shot is pretty cool and their is an artist that does claim to have invented it - he was featured in popular photography about 18 months ago now. As a technique it has been copied quite a lot but it does look cool. It would be good to see it done well, but with other strong graphic images other than flags.

Did I miss something here? (Probably!)

Indeed. My favourite use of the technique so far is the one with a smiley face as a background (Terry Gee I think?).
