I'm just starting to try and work out some system for saving my images. I'm just wondering if there is a point to keeping the original un processed raw file? After photoshopping it, and saving the tif file of the image i want, Is there actually any point in keeping the original RAW file? Sure i understand "maybe i might want to change something later", but I'm just wondering if that's something I should be worried about?

Thanks

Yes, keep the RAW file. I would lose the TIFF and instead keep the PSD.

If you're using it here in a challenge then you should keep the original RAW file in case your photo is suspected of violating rules - you'd need to provide the unedited footage from the camera.

If you're not, then it's up to you. My point of view is that storage is cheap these days - good shots aren't.

I save EVERY SINGLE ONE of my RAW files. Here is my process before I even look at the pictures!

-Transfer from CF card to computer hard drive
-Back up all originals to DVD
-Make 2nd copy on external hard drive

Then I open up the files and can mess with them all I want, knowing the original is on a DVD if I happen to tamper with it or accidently delete it.

Also, about once a month I back up all the images I have edited.

Anal? Maybe.

Just wondering, but how often do you ever end up referring to the original file? Is it that important? are their many instances when you'd want to re-edit a photo?

Thanks :D

I do it ALL the time. Not with every photo, or even most of them (hell, not even many of them), but who knows which one it might be?

You will find that over time your editing skills will improve or change. You may decide that the technique you used last year isn't one you like now and want to start from scratch. Without the RAW file you would not have anything to go back to. I consider the RAW file to be a digital negative that simply gets filed away Just In Case.

Like _eug said, your editing skills will grow and change with time. You may find yourself going back and doing re-edits of shots. I often do. I also keep all my RAW files. Is it necessary to keep them all? Probably not, and I don't actually keep them all, I do delete the real bad ones. But out of the "keepers", I retain all the RAW files.

Gotta chime in with _eug and kirbic: I look back at shots I did 6 months ago and see improvement, and it's fun to re-edit. Without the original, that would be impossible for you.

Good luck finding something that works for you!

On a positive note, you would also have to submit the original unedited file if you have an image make the top five in a challenge. I also agree about keeping the originals any which way you can to re-visit or re-edit.
