I like the compactness -- I have a tiny shoulder bag from which I can get it out and shoot within a few seconds.

Yep, I carry mine in my shirt pocket... It's with me Everywhere

I've used it almost exclusively in automatic mode

Ummm, is there a manual setting I've missed for the last year and a half?

; just hate the excessive shutter lag.

zzzzzzzzz... <click> Ah! :)

<clip> So far it's been rugged and reliable

Amen

and the batteries last a long time if you don't use the LCD.

They seem to last long even with the LCD... always happy with that part...

My only (but major) problem with it is the complete lack of control over shutter speed and aperture...

I almost overlooked the F707 in favor of the Nikon Coolpix 5000 until I put the Sony up to my eye and realized that a good electronic viewfinder could be made. I did not like EVF's on the Canon Pro 90 or the Dimage7 because they were too low res. I diefinitely needed a camera with 5 megapixels and a fairly long zoom. It also has a very smooth and quiet zoom which allows you to use the zoom while shooting video. The battery has incredibly long life and the camera even shows the battery time remaining. The swivel body is great and it's ability to shoot in complete darkness with the hologram assist. I think you can tell I love this camera.

I almost forgot that I also have the Canon S100 Digital Elph that I really love because I can take it anywhere that I wouldn't take my F707. My only problem with it is that my brother and sister keep borrowing it. I must get it back.

I guess I was thinking that the combination of Exposure Compensation, manually-set ISO sensitivity, and spot-metering offered some degree of manual control. I never have time to fiddle with that stuff normally; I have to grab a frame when it happens.

Also, I can just hand this camera to Isaac when he wants to shoot a picture.

My first digital camera was completely automatic. I was looking for an alternative to disposable Kodaks, but then I got into photography a bit (largely due to this site) and wanted to have more control over the image. I read many reviews and decided on the S30 because it offered me all the features I wanted and was well recommended. Cost also was a major concern. (I see the S30 as a cheaper alternative to the G2). I've handled larger cameras such as the G2 and looking back, I like the feel of the smaller camera better. It is hard to get people to take me seriously with such a small camera though (you should see the looks I get when I use it on a full-size tripod = P

Added: Lionelm, with an adapter from www.ckcpower.com, you can add 37 mm lenses to the S30. I use a Tiffen 2x and a few filters and have had pretty good results.

The 602z replaced my 2600z (p&s also Fuji). Basically, it HAD to give me the fullest (is that a word) manual control and FEEL like a SLR (or as close as I could get without spending over $1000). That was another big factor. Since technology changes so fast I didn't want to spend too much only to have the camera drop in price quickly and be replaced soon and I want to upgrade to a real D-SLR in probably about 3 or 4 years so I had to get something with good quality and the most useful features that will still satisfy me for the next few years. My other choice was the Minolta Dimage 7i because I love the manual zoom ring but I'm glad I got the 602 and the 6mp SCCD is amazing.

Since I was finally gonna be able to take as many pics as I want without worrying about developing, I wanted a camera that I could grow with. I've always just used a point-and-shoot.
I decided early to get either a Oly or Canon. Then it was just a matter of comparing features. I really love the swivel LCD and wanted a remote and the ability to add lenses. After weeding out the rest, I was left with the G2.
