I'd really appreciate comments since I'm just learning. I'd welcome views on both on how I did in the initial photo and what post-processing would improve it.

Also, what do you think of the composition above vs. this one?

Thanks for helping me learn!

So which ferry is it? I spent MANY an hour on the Bainbridge Island ferry lol. Oh I loved that place. Bainbridge that is, not the ferry hehe.

The problem you encountered was probably due to the wording "shot for the 'Straight from the Camera' challenge". You are not suppose to discuss outtakes or challenge entries even if you didn't enter, I believe. You should just say I have a pic and I would like some comments on it. :)

I don't know which ferry it was, but I was on the Fauntleroy-Vashon Island ferry at 8:35 on Sunday when I took it. So with enough study of the ferry schedule, you could probably work it out. :)

I was so happy there was fog - I thought there might be and this might be the first time I actually envisioned a picture that worked out!

WOW. Thanks so much, yanko! I'll have to study what you did and try it myself.

:)

Lemme ask this: did you pick this one to edit vs. the other one for a reason? Or did you just pick one at random?

If you deliberately picked this one, can you explain why you liked it better than the other?

Thanks again!

To be honest, I thought I picked the first one when I pulled it in photoshop but accidently grabbed the other one instead. :) The only reason I thought about editing the first one was because the boat was bigger and I wanted to see how the detail looked as changes were made. However, looking at them both I like the composition of the one I did edit better. I think the negative space just works better in the second one. Plus the boat is more at an angle giving me the impression it is moving towards the center vs the other one which we just see the back of.

Edited for clarity.

Thanks to yanko and many others, my post processing skills have improved a bit.

Since I'm not able to muster the energy to shoot for either of the current open challenges tonight, I thought I'd go back to a shot I took in July and still liked, and see if I could apply what I've learned. Note that this is a different shot from the same series, but the original looked just as washed out as the others.

The dark corners came out of the photo, not my deliberate burning. I'd be curious to hear what people think about leaving it in as it is, enhancing it, removing it, replacing it with gradients like yanko applied and showed earlier in this thread ...

I'm also curious whether people like the bright red name tag or not. Should I have just left it in B&W? The color is real, but I did adjust it.

Anyway, here's my latest edit:

As a side note, I just visited my girlfriend on Bainbridge for a week and it was amazing. Loved the place to death.

Post processing seems to be key with hazy shots. It's a sad fact that some things are only beatiful to the eye but not as a photograph, which is where PP can help out. Good job with the shot!
