Nice idea. What if it were expanded to "shoot a photo that invokes the style of a well-known artist" (could restrict it to painters, possibly).

You mean the style they call Surrealism? :)

Well, there's more to "surrealism" than "Dali"; in fact, to many Dali is a dead end, a caricature of surrealism. I think the OP is looking for a particular style, the strange, "melted" look of Dali. I don't see how it could be a challenge, though, without a major relaxation of the editing rules :-)

Also, there's a whole photographic tradition of Surrealism, so photographers could avoid the painting aspect altogether. I like the idea of "pick your painter."

One of my all time favourite Dali paintings, not really surreal, and not melted either. This could be interesting... but as Bear said, might need some special aditing rules (as in almost anything goes)

A famous portrait of Dali by Phillipe Halsman that I once did a pretty extensive critique on. I think he did an excellent job staying to Dali's style. It also needs to be kept in mind that this was done about 50 years ago and there was nothing seen like this at the time.

my wife almost burned down the house for the something new and heat challenges (on photos that were never used) so please don't give her a reason to melt anything else:)

seriously I think it could be done with the normal editing rules (advanced) as long as no one was dq'd for cloning fising line. I for one would love to give it a try.

I can't find it but there was a portrait of Dali where his face was rippling. It was taken using an enlarger and a tray of milk. With the picture projected on the milk he dropped stuff into the tray to give it a surreal look.

Probably wouldn't pass validation though because it would be photographing a photograph (projected onto the milk).

It looked really cool though :)
