I have a picture which I'd like to make a print but I'm not sure how to crop it, so I thought I'd ask for advice.
Unfortunately, I managed to overwrite the original shot (I know, I know) so this is the closest to the original I have (hope these links work):
No Room 1
and here is one crop I came up with:
No Room 2
but I'd quite like to keep the third bird in. I think the feeder is the problem.
All help/comments/rude remarks welcome.
Thanks

I like your crop. The first thing I focused on when I saw your photo was your remarkable capture of the bird in flight. I like how the crop draws attention to that part of the photo. I only hope you still have enough resolution at such a tight crop to still make a good print :)

Thanks. With that crop I can get a 6x4 @ 150 dpi and with a 125% resize, an 8x6. That's a pretty severe crop, though.

I actually like them both but I prefer the wider crop better. It is easy to want to focus on the bird frozen in the air because it is such a nice cpature but I feel that the first photo tells the story better. It reveals more of the evironment which, to me, completes the scene and makes it more interesting. On a side note. I feel that the photos could use a little more 'punch' with level or curves adjutments and a little more sharpening. Sorry, I have such a tendancy to go into 'critique' mode. The ironic part for me is that I was taking some very similar type photos this last weekend and last night I was going through the very same thought process regarding my cropping.

That's fine, you critique away. I'll take all the suggestions/advice/praise/brickbats I can get. I'll have a play as you suggest.
But right now, I'm off to bed. Night night.

Another thought I had is too make a wide crop from the first image by cropping off the top portion of the feeder and leaving the lower half showing all three birds. That way feeder is clearly visible but not a dominating element in the picture.

I played around with cropping your photo a bit and I actually like it better the original way. If anything, you can cut a bit off the bottom, but I think it looks better to leave all three birds as well as the entire feeder in the photo. I do agree with timj's suggestion about the level adjustments though.
Nice shot. |

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. Here's what I came up with in the end:
No Room!
which keeps all three birds and gives me an 8x12 max print size. I've also tweaked the levels a bit and NeatImage'd it.
Further comments/suggestions very welcome.

almost exactly what I was just going to suggest - except I'd have 'letterboxed' it a bit more, perhaps.

Very nice! I'm glad we could help. It is a lot easier when there is an excellent image to start with.

Thanks. Had to go for this to fit an 8x12 print (which seemed to be the closest form factor to what I wanted).

Thanks again. It's good to have others to get suggestions form and bounce ideas off.

Fantastic photo! As some other people here, I like the wider crop better.
