We just discovered the DailyAwards site a couple of days ago when someone posted their win. I went ahead and opened an account for myself and my wife (artoole) and go figure - she takes a category award way before I will. I think day 4 got her a category award in Still Life. Way to go woman!!!

Not to diminish the quality of photos there (I have an account there, too), but I would be surprised if a blue-ribbon winner from here does not score an award there! (After all, statistically, there are 3 winners here every week, and there are 7 days * 21 categories * 2 types + weekly awards ~= 300 winners there.)
Still, congrats on reaffirmation on how great that shot was!
Edit: corrected numbers

I think that "two peas in a pod" shot is also from here!
I think the system on Dailyawards is strange. Voters votes are "weighted" on how many shots they voted on...if they ever won an award...etc....
The votes your shot receives is also strange....You may have only two actual votes..but that translates in to "17" depending on who voted for you....
If it is not how I say, then I am completely lost!

It is awfully confusing. That site doesnt even come close to comparing to DPC, but it is nice seeing your pic on the front page of anotehr site. I have a handful of pics up that are doing pretty blah. I think they did better here. Oh well. |

Actually there are some photogs over at DA that would do quite well here, there is some amazing stuff but also the post-p rules are not as tight as here.
It is pretty easy to win over there, Of the 6 shots that I put up there 4 have ribboned and 2 of those have ribboned in both Category and Signature classes. (And that was not from friends and family voting (see next paragraph)).
A mediocre shot can stay on top at DA (and win a daily) if one has a posse to call/email and tell them all to vote high on that specific shot. But that only works for the category class and will only stay there for a day and then reality sets in. Signature class is the rating of voters with higher standing in the community.
I like the fact that there is a clean-up mechanism that deletes the 4s and below after a certain amount of time, and they do have a Troll vote mechanism in place.
I also like the fact that I don't have to vote/look at OPKs and OPAs (other peoples kids/other peoples animals) if I don't choose to. I vote in the categories that interest me.
It is kind of weird scoring and I haven't quite figured it out...I had a shot that sat at the top of the over all ratings of a category for a week but only received one daily award.
Still it is fun to see your stuff on the front page...

Way to go - keep on bragging. When the awards are all virtual the bragging may be the only thing you got (except for a really cool pic). |

Whooh hooh - I just got my first category award in the Underwater catehory for this - which is just sort of odd considering that it is in 57thplace overall in that catgeory. But still cool to see that pic up on another site with a nifty ribbon (didnt see one here with that shot). |

I was up to 88 awards but have deleted alot of my lower scoring ones to make way for some new photos as i ran out of space.
I`m now on 46 awards and have the No 1 photographer spot :)
I still can`t decide if i like the voting system. I have tested out some dpc challenge entries before here but as there are lots of dpc members their now i will stop this. |

I am not surprised at how many DPCers hang there as a side venue. Voting tastes seem a bit different and the system is a bit odd. I havent posted anything there before entering it here but have been soon after. This site is way more fun. Way to go on the awards there Marbo. You have some amazing stuff. |

vtruan's 'This Bud's for You' is currently the number one image on the site and Timothy Lubcke, Aussie_Bluey has the number 2 ranked image for 'Strawneck Ibis'. Congrats Van and Timothy! Oh and:

I've been watching DailyAwards for over a month. It It's quite a bit different from dpc, or any other photography website, in the way the winners are selected. Here are a few of my observations.
Most of the category awards go to images that have been uploaded within the past few days. If an image doesn't win a category award within it's first week it probably isn't going to get one. Ratings usually go down rather than up as more and more people vote on an image.
I don't think it was designed to be that way but Signature awards generally echo category awards. If a shot wins a category award it's very likely to also win a Signature award within a few days, sometimes on the same day for the really well liked shots.
The quality of the images that get awards is somewhere below what gets a ribbon here, and can be inconsistent. They are giving out a lot more awards so many of them go to mediocre photos. We give out nine ribbons in a normal week, DA gives out over 300 a week. But when you get beyond the daily cat and sig winners, and progress to weekly, monthly, and annual award winners, the shots are definitely up to level that would get a ribbon here.
A concept that catches the voters favor will be good for several awards. If you find something that the voters really like, flood the site with similar images and you'll probably get several awards before the idea gets old. Examples are the flying motorcycles in the Sport category, the single blossom against a black background shots in Flowers, sharp songbird close-ups in Wildlife, and the pretty girl with smooth, pale complexion in Portraits.
The voting is supposed to be anonymous and random but the voter can, at least partially, defeat the system by voting in a single category (there are 21 categories) or by looking up who entered a particular shot and it's current score if it appears in the list of the top 100 images provided for each type of award in each category. Sometimes you find images that are not really good enough to deserve an award but have very high scores from the first few voters who have ranked them.
The concept assigning each voter a "weight" that increases their voting power according to how many awards they have won is very different from what we are used to. People have trouble adjusting. It assumes that someone who is successful in earning awards at DA is a superior judge of photos, or something along that line. This is not universally accpted but works fine for the purposes of DA where everybody knows the system going in to the competition. In the long run the voting system may need tweaks to avoid limiting variety if the membership becomes static.
The site, and it's system for voting and showing results, are well designed and executed. It's not hard to see that a considerable amount of thought went in to it. It is unique and yet appeals to a wide audience. The developer, Eric Elsten, obviously intended it to be a pretty low maintainance, automatic system. But he has been struggling with success as the site grows rapidly. He continues to make improvements, some major and some just small tweaks. The site needs to be able to accomodate a larger number of users and images, perhaps much larger. If the software powering it can keep up with the growth, and if Eric continues to make the refinements that improve the user's experience like he has been doing, I think DailyAwards.com is a winner and will be around for a long time.
It's affect on us here at dpc remains to be seen. dpc'ers are doing very well there so far, including holding the top spot in photographer rankings (Congrats and keep up the good work to Mark Bond, our own very talented marbo). It might not be good for either site, dpc or DA, if dpc'ers came to be very dominant there. It is another, somewhat different outlet for our efforts with the more easily won awards there being encouragment and reinforcement to the progress of our users that haven't ribboned yet here. If you have a neat shot that doesn't fit a current challenge topic, DailyAwards is a good place to show it rather than risk doing the shoehorn thing. There are no restrictions on editing so you have a place to enter that image that needed to be fixed up a little more than dpc allows, and for your ventures into digital art. There is no time frame limitation like here so you can finally get some recognition for those great older shots that are languishing on your hard drive. It could seriously undermine the anonymity of our challenges if people start to use DA as a venue for trial baloons. dpc should not look at DailyAwards as a competitor, but rather as complimentary and beneficial.
I'll list the categories for those of you who have never visited Daily Awards --

Pets
Seascapes
Abstract
Black and White
