Original on the left. I still prefer the version with the person in it. I like the human element in photos much better than a static interior. Perhaps if the person was a priest or a worshiper or an old person it would have done better.

The score did increase, so who am I to argue with the collective DPC wisdom. ;-)

Thanks to all for all the helpful comments.

I don't think I commented during the challenge, but the person just spoiled the effect for me. I like your redo better. :)

Thanks Karmat, you were not alone. Almost all the comments on the original felt the same way. One or 2 people thought the person added to the shot. The reason I chose this one to redo was the fact that the commenters on the original were almost unanimous about not liking the person element. I shot the original without the person, but it seemed lacking to me. So when my wife walked into the frame to get a closer look I snapped a few more frames.

I come from a photojournalism background. I am fairly certain that a newspaper or magazine editor looking at both shots would prefer the one with the person in it. This has been the hardest adjustment for me working the DPC challenges. As you can tell though, I am taking the comments to heart and making changes. The most difficult part was explaining to my wife why we had to drive back down to Galveston (1 hour drive) for this shot when I had the exact same shot from the week before!

I think the reason the one with the person in it didn't do as well (or was less liked) is more due to the clothing and position than their existence in the image. Her clothes and stance just don't match the environment and detract from the overall image.

I agree with preferring a person in it I just don't think you chose the right one.

remake :

looked up from processing to see it was 4 mins after the cut off. opps.
oh well. i don't think it holds a candle to the original, anyway...

Looking at the thumbnails, I think you are probably correct. The colors are more appealing, and teh drop is more defined.

In agree, I would have prefered a more church like subject. I think I still would have recieved comments preferring no person at all.

I try not to shot specifically for the DPC voters, but I would like some validation now and then. It is a difficult line to walk - personal creativity that appeals to the voters, or shooting specifically for the voters.

take two 6.17 66% a 1.73 improvement :)

for the original people said that it was too bright, oversaturated and dnmc because the original flower came out pink. I used different colors but made sure to still fit the original challenge. now if only i got two chances with every challenge:)

yeah... colors _are_ better in the original, but i kinda liked the look of the 3 drops vs the 1... they're smaller, though, so you can't see them well in the thumb.

so much for thinking i could do SOOO much better w/ advanced editing... bah. who needs to edit?

btw, Judi, I just wanted to say that even though you clearly know what you're doing, garnering a higher score for your new shot, that I actually like your original better. It conveys the point of old vs. new (I didn't even make the connection on the take 2 shot) and has a certain poignance to it, whereas the new one just has the visual interest of the hand position. I'd say it was more like a fashion shot. But that's what you get for trying to fix something that ain't broke! ;)

Thanks Don. I find it interesting all the different opinions on one image...it certainly opens my eyes as to how people see my work...and that is good.

I don't like that you were DQ'd personally i think that is a mistake. Also I have no doubt it was a very improved photo

OK, here's my entry in Take Two.

Now here is the TWO I put together for Take Two

The first one was a DQ, so I couldn't help but score better :-) The photo before it was DQ'd was running around a 5.8, so I knew the score should be decent. Then I decided to add the toolbox background from the other, which is my highest scoring photo to date. I figured I'd go with two decent performers for this challenge.

I wish now I had shot the Take Two entry with my Nikon CoolPix 8700, because I wasn't able to get the wide angle or DoF with my current lens choices, but I'm pretty happy with the end result.
