For what it's worth, here's the before and after on my "Night Shot" entry from the challenge just completed. The "white dots are two buoys and a star. There was moonlight, so the buoys picked that up in the 15-second exposure. As Rikki asked, the image was shot at "nautical twilight". Note that the entered image is completely uncropped, also.

I appreciate the remarks re: my "skill with gradients" but this was a basic editing challenge, and no gradients were used or, for that matter, needed. As you can see, the shot's very close to straight-from-camera; I exposed to the right on this one, so the original's a little bright (intentionally) for a night shot, and then in PP I just brought it down to where the horizon and sky were almost merging, and amped up the clarity of the blue. Incidentally, the blue is the result of shooting with tungsten WB.

Thanks for all the comments!

I kinda prefer the original but with a little more contrast in the rocks. The after pic is a little too dark for me. The light blue is much more peaceful and tranquil whereas in the after with it being so dark it adds a slight tension.

I prefer the original because the blue in the entry is too strong.
I like the slight contrast between the sky and the sea in the original, which is mostly lost in the edited version.

That "slight contrast" is more than what they eye saw. The image was shot at nautical twilight, when the sky and the horizon were merging, and I wanted this. I felt the unedited version didn't look "nighty" enough, also. The amped-up blue just pleased me, I'm a sucker for that kind of blue. It's a result of adding contrast to the darker image.

I can see where many would prefer the original, as an image, however. I probably do, myself. But I wanted to NAIL the night aspect of it...

The tungsten WB does the job almost by itself. But the edited edition has more pop - at least for the DPC/poster audience. The border also completes the image and prevents the eye escaping. The original, without the border, has much less emphasis. The edited version works very well. But a night that blue? I imagine a darker violet/indigo blue would be a little more natural. Sounds like we're discussing jazz, does it not.

Very much so. I can't hear, so for me colors take the place of music. I definitely think of them that way :-)

It's understandable why the term chromatic applies to the visual and the audio arts, sight and sound. Music is a good metaphor to work with in the visual element.
