I was at Sam's Club today, and decided to pick up a sweet little set of rechargeable batteries for a smoking price. I already have some, but the flash really kills them quickly when doing macro work...

But anyway, onto my question:

These came with a battery charger that plugs right into the wall, and no instructions. As soon as you plug it into the wall, the light comes on green -- I've been charging four now for close to 2 hours, and the light hasn't changed. I tried sticking them in my old charger (the one that charges 2100 mah batters -- these are 2500 mah) -- and it shows up red -- meaning still needs charging.

Anyway, anyone know if the light is supposed to change or what gives...maybe I got a defective charger?

The light on mine goes out when it's done. But, it's never taken more than an hour.

There should be a switch for 2 batts versus 4 batts, is that correctly set?

2500's take longer than 2100's, and mine take about 3 hours to fully charge 4 batts.

Is there a red light that is just not coming on? Perhaps yours goes from steady green to blinking green or something like that....

The batteries I bought with a charger were already fully charged when I got them out of the package. I did the same thing, plugged them in, green light immediately...so I put them in the flash and it worked. That was the first night I got my flash, so I played around with it for a few days, running the batteries down. When I put them in to recharge, the light was red...so after a few hours they recharged and the light turned to green. I'm sure your charger is fine. :)

ENergizer makes alot of different chargers. The one that I have is grey slides open and will charge 4 AA or 4 AAA at the same time, when it hits the wall the light comes on, when done charging it goes off. The one that I have is an 8 hour charger. They make a 15 minute, a 2 hour and an 8 hour. The chargers dont really sense when the batteries are done charging. They charge for a preset time based on which charger you have. I can take a set that just came off the charger, put them right back in and it will again charge them for 8 hours. BTW if you do infact have the 8 hour charger it does take longer, but its better for the batteries and they also seem to last longer.

I think one of my Energizer chargers (I have several) is this way, too. I think it relies on ESP or something to know when they're charged, because it doesn't really make any indication one way or another.

Two of the ones I have will change color, or the red light will go out, but one of them just doesn't really seem to give you any hints about whether it's charged or not.

If it's the cheapie charger I have the light is merely on a timer and has nothing to do with the charge. The time is 8 hours. You can test this by putting them in overnight. In the AM the light will be off. Pull them out and put them right back in and see if the light goes on again.

There's an even older Energizer charger which came with some 1800 mAh batteries which is timed for 14 hours.

There seems to be a feeling that the faster chargers make the batteries "wear out" faster (overall life -- not duration of a single charge).

well geez...how can I tell which charger it has?

I already took them off then put them back on lol, so it probably reset.

--

The back of the package says "CHARGE BEFORE USE" heh so I'm assuming they definately need charged.

I'll give them from about 8:30 till about 12:30 tonight, then they're coming off, and getting exchanged at Sam's if the light doesn't change...if that set does the same thing, I'll keep it and know that's how it's supposed to be.

--

Thanks for your help.

If the light isnt off in 4 hours its not going to go out. That likely means its the 8 hour charger. If you paid about 20 dollars for 4 2500mah AA batteries and the charger its an 8 hour charger. And will take 8 hours to charge. Personally I'd keep it, as it seems to give longer life to my batteries over their life compared to any quick charger I have ever used.

How about $20 for EIGHT (8) 2500 mah AA's AND FOUR (4) 850 mah AAA's AND the charger!

You guys think I can charge the AA's in my other Energizer charger that came with the 2100 mah batteries??? Cause that one takes like 2 hours.

deapee, usually new batteries needs extended charges (on their first 3 charges) to ensure a better life in the future. You shouldn't stop/interrupt the charging midway?

a suggestion is to search the model number of the Energizer charger and see is it a quick charger, or just a normal "slow" charger that may takes 4-5 hours? Isn't it printed on the packaging?

yeah just found it on the energizer site -- it's an 8 hour charger...that's kinda lame. If they wrote that on the outside of the box, I probably wouldn't have ever purchased the batteries...That's a LOOOOOOOOOONG time.

as far as I know, batteries are all the same. the 8 hours thing is the charger. You can always charge the batteries using a different quick charger.

on a side note, anyone using the Sanyo Eneloop batteries? My current ones doesn't hold charge for more than 2 days :( so I need to get new ones soon. Thanks

Just came online to post a thread about AA batteries.

I've been using Sanyo batteries for a while, but their life has dropped from a couple of weeks outside the camera to a couple of days or less.

Awful... I bought them on the street so I can't get money back...

Last time I buy Sanyo batteries though.

I like the charger though, nice function and not too fast for charging...

I was told that Sony batteries are Sanyo batteries relabeled.

A friend of mine had a similar experience with her Sony batteries.

I've got 2 sets of 4 Sanyo's...

I recently was told that Panasonic batteries are much better. I tried the brand new 2600 mah rechargeables and after charging them up the first day, I put them in my camera. That was 3 weeks ago and after around 120 pictures as well, I still don't have a battery indicator light...

I will be buying more of these, probably 2 sets...

Of the last 4 challenge entries I made, 3 of them were made using energizer alkalines.
