I'm in Culpeper, so any of the locations sound great to me. I'm a "go" for the 20th.

I'm scheduled to go around the 6th, but I can hold off until the 20th if you all don't mind me tagging along...

Wait, is that April 20th or May 20?

May 20. At least I hope so since that is the day I arranged to have off work! Hope that still works for you.

::::writes 20th on calandar:::::

I'm charging the battery for my camera right now. I'd feel silly if I got to Richmond and my battery died on me (that's happened before).

Works for me! I'll just have to plan something else for late April. Philly sounds good... :) I'm in a traveling sort of mood... :)

I might go to Lancaster in April when my Spawn is on Spring Break.

Another thought is that they're opening a nudist resort in Port Republic (near Harrisonburg). We could all go there, pass out stacks of model releases, and practice our nude photography. But, I'm staying fully clothed. I wouldn't want to frighten anyone.

Anyone else thinking about jumping in with us? So far it looks like we will be making the mile and a half roundtrip hike to Dark Hollow Falls. We probably should plan two or three more stops, and lunch and/or dinner either at Skyland or Big Meadows.

Other than that, all I can see that we need is a time and place to meet. May will be here before you know it! Looking forward to meeting many of you folks for the first time.

Ray

Ok - I've booked a room at the Skyline Resort for Saturday, May 20th. Good to go!

Who else is coming? Should be fun! ;^)

I'm looking forward to it. (I should have my new camera by then!) =)

I'm planning on being there too, but only for the one-day outing, and I'm not sure if I'll have family members in tow. What camera you buying SJ? New toys are always so much fun!

I'm still planning on being there. I might ask (beg) Gary if I can take the 30D on a field trip since I should only owe around 200-300 on the camrea by then.

We need to start hammering out the details.... does anyone have a suggestion as to where to meet, and a time?
05/01/2006 03:00:39 PM · #44
Will everyone be staying at the Skyline Resort?

Edit: Those who are staying over, I mean. :) That'd be a great place to meet... We're looking into a room there.

Unless things change we aren't planning to stay overnight, but meeting at Skyline Resort works for me.

Where is the Skyline Resort?

glad2badad, Cyndane:

Are both of your families staying at SkyLAND Resort? We've all been typing "Skyline" but the link you provided way up top of this thread, Barry, takes us to Skyland.

If that's the place, the LINK says it's the highest point on Skyline Drive and located at mile 41.7 (which means nothing to me, really, but it's a start).

Crud. You're right. Skyland Resort is nice, but we want to stay at Big Meadows. Here's why.

Dark Hollow Falls is at mile marker 50.7
Big Meadows Lodge is at mile marker 51.2
The Byrd Visitor Center is at Big Meadows and is wonderful. We camped at Big Meadows a few years ago and the park personnel are wonderful there with tours, etc... On that outing, the same time of the year in late May, we saw a couple of fawns in the fields (the guides pointed out to us). Very cool.

I'm calling now to switch to the Big Meadows Lodge. SO GLAD you caught that nova! Plus, it's less expensive. ;^)

Ok. Switched to Big Meadows Lodge for a room, not that that impacts anybody really...

Dark Hollow Falls is at mile marker 50.7 on skyline drive. There is a parking area for the falls so we could meet there. Since that's the first place to shoot might make the most sense.

There are also things to see and do at the Byrd visitor center at mile marker 51.0.

There is another falls, Lewis Falls, in the same vicinity...
