I may have a slightly used (5000 pics) Rebel XT kit for sale. That 30D has been taunting me for a while now and I may have to take the plunge.

Jimmy-
I would go with the Canon Powershot Pro-1 (high end point and shoot with 8 mp and tons of lush manual features including super macro mode)
I don't think you will enjoy the Rebel XT because of the compactness of the camera/controls and you seem to have large hands, although you seem used to working with smaller cameras like the Gateway. However the CMOS sensor on the Rebel is superior to the CCD on the Nikon D50. You will get less noise at higher ISO's on the Rebel for sure. I think the D50 is 6.1 mp, vs Rebels 8.0. Keep in mind your prints that you do.
Buying a dslr is just the beginning, you are gonna have to invest in lenses also, and the kit lenses are usually soft (focus) or atleast mine were. I have upgraded to only Canon lenses (mostly L or prime).
I really love my canon powershot pro-1, in fact I used it in the Texture challenge most recently. It is great camera.

Kelly - Ironically enough, that is one of the few that I have been seriously looking at too. Good info - thank you. And I do have big, sometimes clumsy hands. ;-) Hmmm... Decisions decisions... |

Matt, I repeat what I said in another thread... other people besides me have looked over my camera, and proclaimed that it's not metering correctly. So, it's not just me. Now, some of the problems I've had with the camera, you did help me straighten out...like the soft focus problem I was having. So, like I said, partly me, partly my individual camera. Everyone cranks out a lemon every once in awhile, including Canon and Nikon. Hopefully, I won't get one of Canons. However, I know from reading reviews and prices on eBay that I'm not the only one dissatisfied with it. Even the *ist is currently going for more than the E-300 on Ebay. |

I just got a Rebel XT on monday and was skeptical as to how much I would REALLY like it. I love it! I come from a point and shoot background like you so I wanted somthing with all the features but not costing too much or too heavy. While the XT is very small I think I will get used to it, and with the pictures it takes I dont care if I do. Worse case scenario Ill buy the battery grip and be fine. I got mine new off EBAY( wasn't grey market, never opened ) for 695$ ( this person is selling another black one right now, pm me if you want the sellers name)and I just bought a 1.8 50mm off fredmiranda.com for 55$ ;). I know I really lucked out with the prices, but the image quality is insane, definate jump from my 5mp sony.
I would suggest the AV, TV, and P modes before you go full manual, and if you have a grand to spend youll have plenty left over for memory cards and possibly a flash! regardless of what you get, good luck and cant wait to see the pictures!

If you get the Rebel XT make sure you get the black one. I now regret buying the silver one and am thinking of buying a used 10D or 20D
Also it seems to me that //www.beachcamera.com has the best deal on the XT for now. $567 after the rebate.

I think this Jimmy is buying a 10D if I feel the need to downgrade MP. What is better is what I am researching.

Also looking for advice people. My options:
10D used: $550
10D used with battery grip: $650 Shipped
Rebel XT New (Black):$667 shipped
20D (New): $1089
The wife is getting the silver XT. She probably won't want the grip so if I don't get another XT then I will sell it.
Once this is done I will sell the small Powershot A80 she has. And possibly the S1IS I have

Incidentally, I have seen a 10D just over 400 dollars US here. It was snapped up within a few days granted, but most 2nd hand digital cameras are in our thirsty market here in Taipei.

I'm sorry, but I find this a rather confusing statement. You don't think he would like working with the Rebel XT because it is too small, but you recommend the Pro 1 which is smaller?
Scratching my head on that one...
Really, it's like a bicycle. Some people never try a penny farthing, but those that do get used to it. Some people never try a unicycle, but those that do get used to it. Some people ride road bikes, others downhill sleds, others BMX and some ride granny bikes. It might feel a bit weird for a brief period, but what difference does it really make if you get used to it anyhow?
I have recently gone through a very curious change in my transportation from being a Mountain bike user to riding a 150cc scooter and switching back and forth has been quite an eye opener for the feeling of my bicycle's cockpit.
I don't all of a sudden start falling off though.
Likewise, if people can be comfortable using P&S cameras, there is no actual reason that they cannot be comfortable using a 350XT. Think about it. |

So. I am going to buy a camera tomorrow. I want a Nikon because I am familiar with the controls and don't really like the heft and look of Canon.
So. I am going to get either the D50 or D70 body. HOWEVER, I am thinking about buying one of the bodies by itself and picking up the other lens.
For example, I may get the D70 body with the 18-70 lens... or vice versa...
can someone convince me that this is a good idea or bad idea?
Help and hurry! |

Well, I'm the proud, excited (& nervous) owner of a brand new Canon EOS Rebel XT!!! It'll be at least a few days before I'm ready to post any shots from it, but watch for new capabilities from me! :-)
YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!
EDIT: It looks so nice underneath my name... ;-P

Congrats..
I must admit it is very strange not seeing the Gateway DC-T50 listed underneath your name!
You did wonders with that little cam, can't wait to see some of your new photo's.
Enjoy. |

Don't forget to send in the rebate form. It looks like I can use it, too, even though Beach Camera didn't mention it when I bought my XT a few weeks ago...thanks to this thread, I found out about the rebate. Thanks!

No doubt about it, you are going to love the Canon! Not to say you didn't rock with the Gateway ~ you hold the entire first page of Highest Scores with it!
Looking forward to meeting you at the May 20 Skyline Drive gtg, SJ. Congrats on the new camera. |

add $6000 more and you will get 1Ds Mark 2

I got 350D, another choice will go for 20D |
