I ordered my camera today and now I'm looking for a CPL to put on it. I know that it take a 58mm. Are certain brands better than others? And of those brands, does it make a difference in what's on the label? Checking Ebay, the Hoya goes from about $18 up to $100. What's the difference?

you may want to see if the person in this threadfrom a little while back still has his 55 although you'd need a step-up ring but if you're getting the lens for free it would be worth it in my eyes.

I'm not sure about the differences but I'm betting it is all about the glass quality.

good luck.

The differences -- some filters will tint the image rather than being neutral, some are coated to reduce glare, some are hard to clean, some are thin so you don't get vignetting with wide angle lens. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. B+W are some of the best, Tiffen is generally the worst.

In my opinion Nikon makes some of the best polarizers. Unfortunetely, they are pretty darn expensive, but keep an eye on ebay for them used. I picked up a nice 52mm for $30 or $40. I am after a 77mm right now, but I am afraid it's going to cost me $100+, but I hope to find a used one in the $60 range. Anyway, good luck.

Cheers,

What do you guys think of HOYA 58mm S-HMC Circular Polarizer SUPER Filter THIN? It's going for $45 new on ebay.

The Hoya S-HMC is a good filter. Unless you are shooting with a very wide lens, you might not need the thin version; if you only need the standard thickness version, you likely can save money.

I'm going to put it on a Fuji Finepix S9000. What do you think? Should I go for the standard? I think that one was going for about $25.

I think you're fine with the standard, but do make sure its the "HMC" which is the multicoated version.

Thanks so much!

Another problem with the thin filters is that u can't stack something else on top of it. I don't think the thin filters are very useful. I don't get any vignetting with any of my filters on any of my lenses. I have stacked several ND filters on my 17-40 and had no issues at 17mm.

I second this.
Thin filters are less useful IMO because I cant use my lens cap on it, cant stack other filters on it - painful!

I just ordered a B+W circular polarizer from B&H, however I selected a standard (not multi-coated) version. Did I make a mistake? How significant is the difference? Is it worth extra $25-30?

Thanks -- Lev
