Yes...that is definitely me....I know...because I took the image myself. Hubby was eating his dinner in front of the TV at the time....!

Today's interview is with Sir Bazz

Where do you live?

Good morning doc. I'm a bayside boy and live around 20km's S.E. of Melbourne in the suburb of Mentone. Both me and my wife grew up here and want our children to grow up in the same beachside environment that we did.

What got you into photography?

When I went to high school in the early 80's, photography was a mandatory class. The school had a bunch of Pentax K1000's as they were cheap, reliable and pretty hard to break. I'd had a few instamatics before this, (the Agfamatic was one), but high school was my introduction to slr's and the traditional dark room environment. I kicked around with a few slr's between then and now, (Oly OM-2n, Pentax MZ-50), but digital was the catalyst for getting more deeply involved again. I bought a Kodak DX6490 and then realised how much I missed the flexibility of an slr so the next step was to get a dslr to play around with.

Are you a professional?

Photographer ? Your kiddin' aren't ya doc. Have another look at my first 10 submissions here at DPC and you'll see why I'm still working in the IT industry. heeheehee

Give us the story behind one of your favorite challenge entries

I'd have to say my entry for the Deja Vu challenge was the most fun. The model was my wife Rachel and it was just too much fun rubbing sun-tan lotion onto the stomach of a semi-nekkid woman. Infact, bring on the Deja Vu III challenge just for a chanceto do it again.

Pick one of your current opponent's pics as a favorite and explain why.

Hmmmmmmm....Pedro's shots suck. Well maybe not but I hope his Jump entry does.

So many to choose from this legend of DPC but this one is a standout to me.
I think it serves as a great example of the concept, setup and execution routine that is required to be successful here at DPC. It's instantly recognisable and fair to say that photographic equipment played little or no part in the success of the image. Truly a very talented and creative man.

What piece of photography equipment is next on your list?

I just picked up a Sekonic L-358 light meter earlier in the week so thats the latest toy but the Pentax-DA 10-17mm fisheye zoom lens is also on the radar.

Do you have any hobbies outside photography?

Well doc...water skiing, mountain climbing, hang-gliding, scuba diving and the occassional early morning surf all look good on the resume but I've never tried any of them myself. :) Fishing and Golf are more my pace now but even they take a backseat to DPC and photography these days.

Man all day it seems people have been quietly stewing over the 5.x Jump entries. Either that or sweating over their lighting for Color Portrait...

Today's interview is with shanksware

Where do you live?

I currently live in Crystal, MN. We'll be moving to the Macon\\Warner Robbins area in Georgia sometime this summer. Our oldest daughter lives there with her husband and 3 children.

What got you into photography?

I've always been interested in photography. Got my first Polaroid Swinger camera with my paper route money when I was 11. Got a Canon A-1 about 20 years ago and loved it. My wife finally became interested in photography and
wanted to do it for a living. She is going to school for it now. This resulted in the purchase of the Canon 20d about a year ago.

Are you a professional?

Not yet. Studio will open later this summer in Georgia. I'll have to work my current job for a while until it gets going well enough to pay the bills. That means I'll be flying up to Minnesota every Monday and back every Friday evening for a year or two.

Give us the story behind one of your favorite challenge entries.

I found DPChallenge when I was searching the internet for photography sites for my wife. I signed up with the intent of giving her a place to show her tuff and get some good feedback. Well, she's VERY busy with school, so when Shapes II came up, she really didn't have time to shoot. Well I wanted to shoot, and I thought her legs would make a GREAT shape to put up. So I get to enter my first challenge.

I had her put on a bodysuit and stick her legs up in the air in a shapely fashion. Took about 20 shots and worked up what I thought was the best one. When she saw it she agreed that it was great, but asked me which image I had used. She told me that if I won, or if they needed proof, I would have to send in the original. The original of that shot had her breasts fully exposed. NO WAY she was going to allow that to be sent in, even if it was only the SC that saw it. Had to find an image without her breasts showing and work it up. Wasn't as in focus as the first one. When I went to sharpen it, I moved the slider all the way to the right, and what I thought was a cool glow effect showed up. Long story shorter, voters didn't think the glow was cool. "Too much like graphic art". Lesson learned.

Here's the shot.

I still like it.

Pick one of your current opponent¡¦s pics as a favorite and explain why.

Without a doubt it's el`e·men'tal : John Paul Caponigro

Not just because it's the obvious one (it's his highest score ED: not anymore). It's the richness of the yellows contrasting the browns and the foaming azure sea.
Wish he would share how he gets such gorgeous yellow tones in his post-processing. I can only hope to take shots this good and process to this degree of perfection. I love saturated shots like this.

What piece of photography equipment is next on your list?

Canon 5d - will be ordering from B&H this week.

Do you have any hobbies outside photography?

Music, ummmm, music, and ummmm did I mention music?

I actually was a performance trumpet major in college. Now I mostly play the piano. My chops just don't hold up very long playing the trumpet anymore.

A mini interview with Pedro

I just had an interview done not that long ago, so rather than bore anyone with more about my stuff, I decided to simply point out a rather interesting thing I noticed about my round one competitor.

matt me

[spooky music]note that they BOTH came in 5th place.[/spooky music]

matt me

hmmm...could we be the same person? it's possible. could there be two people this dumb? I think not. I think Matt is actually Bizarro Pedro (and I only phrase it that was because I'm older, and quite possibly dumber...er...more dumb)

As for my favourite Sir Bazz photo, I think it's the out-take of his yellow entry (though i had lots of good stuff to choose from) .

the lighting and set up are very appropriate to highlight the theme, and in this one the duck shows some attitude, which is hilrious, because, you know
- he's just a duck. Like what's he gonna do? Quack at you?

Sweet. Nice work Bazz.

P's out.

ps thanks again for doing all this Doc. although I may have to publicly chastize you for creating the game that forced me to enter Jump. yeesh.

Man, not many of you participated in the Textures challenge. Afraid 720 px will reveal your lack of true skillz?

Rikki 43rd 6.196 (Impressive until I realized GIS beat him for the 3rd straight time...)
shanksware 197th 5.316
Judi 232nd 5.141 (motorbike? bring back the twins!)

You are older, yes... :)
But I think I haven't even scratched the surface of my dumbnitude. I'm dumb, no doubt...but I think it gets WAY worse than what I have shown.
So I've got that going for me.

I am Bizarro Pedro - the poor man's version of the real deal.
Pedro is Las Vegas...I'm Reno.
Pedro is San Diego...I'm Camden (New Jersey).
Pedro is a Harley...I'm a Schwinn.
Pedro is a fine wine...I'm landfill runoff.

Welcome to my world.
Bizarro Pedro Land - where creativity rots and the pictures suck.

Where are you at Shanksware? I'm hovering in jump ;)
04/16/2006 04:48:30 PM · #39
Anybody brave enough to predict an upset? Our four seeded contenders Ursula, Rikki, Pedro and Kiwiness are still in it...

I had predicted Bazz would go far, but I have spotted his Jump entry and I'm not sure it's gonna make the cut. :(
04/16/2006 04:58:49 PM · #40
Well I'm not sure where Tony is at at the moment. He could be bluffing and be hovering in the ribbon territory.

My jump entry has fluctuated overnight but nothing drastic. Even if I advance, I'm bound to face either Judi or Kiwiness. Both are pros and both specialize in portrait photography (granted Judi's twins are more in the limelight than her models... hehehehhee).

This might just be my last hurrah for the LoD. But I will be content of moving into the Final 4 ;)

BTW, where are the other interviews?
04/16/2006 05:02:49 PM · #42
I'm predicting an upset :) My jump is more like a big fall. Yikes!

And here are the excuses: spydr is good with jumps. Excuses, excuses.
