I'm in the same boat... already got the new roof, now I have to have a 100 foot dead pine tree cut down (endangering my new roof) and paint the eaves where they had to replace wood when they put on the new roof.... Welcome to the money pit!!! |

I've given myself a "toy budget" - and though I have a full cart at B&H, I haven't hit the buy button yet because my "want list" is sooooooo long - I have to prioritize. Think its going to be a Wacom Tablet and an 85mm prime lens - and maybe a light meter.... OR I don't get the toys right now and I put new flooring in the studio.... can't decide.

I didn't buy any new toys with our tax return. Instead we paid all of it toward the pay off of my husbands motorcycle. However, I did shoot a dance studios recital pictures at the end of march and with my profit from that I bought, a new camera; Olympus e-330, FL-50 flash, wireless radio trigger, backpack, gary fong lightsphere II and paid off the rest of my husbands motorcycle. So, I am excited.

The temptation for new toys was great, as we got a very nice return this year. Decided to use it to pay off major bills instead, freeing up money long term for toys. :)

I bought the following with my tax return...
Alas, only for the day. I was tempted to get a Canon 100-400mm IS, but I decided not to at this time. Instead, my $4,000 tax return (yes, I always try to stack it nicely) is going toward my wedding!!!!
:)
*bounces with excitement* |

Tax return?? You mean the repayment on the interest free loan you gave to the government?
It's funny to see how many people regard their return as some sort of windfall or gift, when it's anything but.

With $22 I guess I could put a down payment on a flash cord. Hey no complainants here, it is better than owing. |

I got a killer return this year...$5600!
So the plan was to put $1000 into the photo biz - an ad in the paper, studio lights, backdrop, stands for the backdrop. that got expanded to include some work on the space to make it customer friendly and not just a hobby space. So the budget got blown. The plan was for a 30D,but that was being paid for from weddings, but then I worked a deal to upgrade by backup from a 300D to a 20D for about $300...
budgets are like rules - made to be broken!
Some will go into the house as well - 2 new brick sidewalks, and maybe some fencing.
I have to get my car through state inspection, and our toy, a 90 Jeep, needs a muffler, maybe an exhaust.
The rest goes into savings, cause if any more goes to B&H I will have to move into their store 'cause the wife'll throw me out.

My water heater just died yesterday. The price almost matches exactly the expected return..
Now the question is, do I enter the "New" challenge or the "Old" challenge????? |

Actually, I have no issue with giving my government an interest free loan. I mean, it works out to only a few dollars for me. And heck, many banks charge that much for checking accounts. So if my few dollars helps the government so be it. It's a fair price for giving me an excellent out of sight out of mind "savings tool".

For me, it's a way to save for something I want. I don't think any of us feel it is a gift, we all know it is owed to us but it is nice to get a lump sum of cash that doesn't have to go to rent or mortgage. It's a joyful time for my simplistic mind :)

Yep,
And if it keeps me from having to pay at the end of the year, I'm all for it.
