And I will be taking a tour of Havana City....

My question is...should I take my camera gear? Will I have any problems with it at the airports, I plan to carry all my gear with me as my carry on. Any help?

Also, I won't have the cam with me the entire time, it's about a vacation, getting drunk, partying, clubs, excursions...that's sort of thing, chilling on the beach...should I get a safe for it, or just use a nice lock on my suitcase? I do not want to have my stuff stolen, or have it kept in the Cuban airport for some silly reason.

I am really worried about this, but don't want to miss the sweet opportunities to take some amazing pictures that I would not normally have the chance to.

Thanks in advance...also, I won't be taking the flash...

Maybe some travel insurance that includes the camera equipment would be a good idea?

I have some advice...take me with you!

That said, definitely take your damn camera! Insurance, yes. Hotels have safes for guests, no? Most do. Airports won't give you probs, why would they? Cuba prolly has a website somewhere out there for rules and regs for visitors.

That said, take me with you!!

Borrow or get a compact camera that you can keep in your pocket. I have an Olympus Stylus that is weather proof and can be turned on/operated with one hand (i.e. if you have a drink in the other). I use mine for the quick candid shots as well as scouting locations.

Wanted to bump this post as I am heading to Cuba on 21st April for 2 weeks. Taking my camera (and getting some insurance!) but had a couple of other questions, photo and non-photo related:

1. I'm going via Nassau as direct entry to Cuba from USA is still forbidden (even though I'm British). I've heard I can buy a Visitor Card at Nassau airport to enter Cuba. Can anyone confirm? (otherwise it's going to put a huge dampener on the holiday!!)

2. Any particular highlights that are a "must-see" on the island? I've got myself the Rough Guide, but you can never tell the really good photography opportunities from reading a book.

Cant help you with any of your questions. Wish I was going with you. I would love to see Cuba before it becomes just another carribean tourist trap with McDonalds and Starbucks on every other corner.

I had a similar question regarding going to Aruba. The whole "take a P&S" kinda defeats the entire purpose does it not? Please show me a P&S shoot that can rival a 20D with a 12mm lens or a 200mm lens for capture.

And sure you can say it's the photographer who matters. But a good photographer will get a better shot with a good tool than a cheap one.

*shrug*

Actually stumbled across her in searching the web for details on Cuba! I'm taking her to dinner on Saturday night.

If anyone can answer my question on the Visitor Card part, I'd be especially grateful!

My brother's ex went to Brooks Institute and took a class trip to Cuba. She got some very very good photos, plenty of interesting subjects to shoot. Definitely take your camera. Even in the midst of vacationing, drinking, partying, you are going to see things you want good shots of.

A lock might be a good idea, but keep in mind at least at US airports, TSA is going to open your bags. If you have them locked, they will cut off your lock! Either don't lock it until you get there (partially defeats the purpose of locking it) or check out one of the new locks out there that have a way TSA can open them to inspect your bags.

A cheap way to get around this is use twist ties. If TSA ahs to get in, they can, but it's a little bit of a deterrent for theives looking for an easy open and grab.

I'd take my camera gear. Life is too short.
