You guys may recall that I've embarked on a healthier lifestyle...last January 23, I went to my doctor who said my blood pressure was through the roof at 158/97 and my weight was up as high as it was when I was 9 months pregnant with my last baby (ugh!)...so I knew something had to give. What had to give was my laziness and my apathy about how I treat myself. I didn't want to croak, and I didn't want to be on blood pressure medicine the rest of my life. That day, I started walking one mile a day. I cut back on fats, sugars, and caffiene. I vowed to control my portion sizes as well. A couple of weeks later, I joined the local YMCA and have added to my daily walk a complete round of the Nautilus machines (circuit training) and another mile on the treadmill. I went back to the doctor on Feb. 16 and found out that I had already lost 16 pounds and had lowered my blood pressure to within the upper normal range. Since then, I've worked out at the YMCA at least 4 nights a week, walked almost daily my mile at work, and the past week or so I've added the evil stairmaster. I can only go about 5 minutes on that thing so far, but I'll get more stamina soon. Anyway, I went back to the doc today for another followup. My weight was down 7 more pounds and my blood pressure was completely midrange normal. I had labwork done a couple of weeks ago and he went over those results...my total cholesterol was 147, down from 202, and my bad cholesterol was 72, down from 140. All my other labs were textbook perfect. My blood pressure medicine is cut down to three days a week, and I don't have to go back to the doc again until June. The doc made my day when he told me that my goal of losing another 80 or so pounds was too much... he wants me to lose another 58 and I'll be perfect for my frame and my height. I already feel better than I have in years, and I actually look forward to working out. I'm never going to be 120 pounds and I'm never going to be a supermodel, but I know I feel and look better and will probably be able to hang around to see my grandkids drive my children as crazy as my kids drive me. ;)

I know this was a long post but I was happy and wanted to share. Anyone else out there sticking with those new year's resolutions to get into better shape?

THANK YOU for your post. What a motivator! I've been constantly putting off doing what you actually had the guts to do. I'm printing this post out and putting it on my mirror and my refrigerator!

Health-wise, I've been feeling worse and worse, and just haven't gotten off my a** and done what I KNOW I need to do. Without even "knowing" you, I can honestly say that I am SO proud of you for having the strength to stick with it.

Keep it up; you'll be in my prayers! (A little extra help can't hurt!)

Go Laurie... I know it can be done! My wife lost over 175 lbs a few years back. She's never felt better. You can do it hon!

Wow, congratulations. My resolution was to get down to 110, but I think if anything I'm further from my goal than when the year started. But now you've motived me! I can do it! Y...eah...

I think being a little over-weight is beautiful...

Now that's the kind of patient I bet every doctor wishes they had -- tell you to fix a few things and you get right on it! :D

Way to go.
