I'd have been tempted if my "Summer's End ΓΆ€” Sunrise" hadn't gotten the time/date DQ from its ribbon, 'cuz this is the official end of winter right now and I could do a completely different-colored variation called "Winter's End ΓΆ€” Sunrise" and the idea appeals, but nah....

Don't do it. yanko is right, it would be lame. Now, if the challenge were "Do Over" (which I think I suggested in the past), that would be cool.

I'm thinking of totally going out of my element and doing a bear_music shot. Now-- where to get some snow...

There's only ONE Bear_Music ribbon winner, and there's no snow in that shot. Knock yourself out, dude; all you need is a skiff and some water... :-)

A "skiff" is a type of duck, right?

Sometimes I think it is hard to appreciate just how good some of the winning photographs are until you try to reproduce them. It's tough and with each hair I pull out trying I love this challenge even more.

"

(those are ditto marks)

I'm having a blast. I can leech off of someone else's creativity. It's great! I've tried four different ribbon winners since last night. One total failure, two that look okay, but just not right, and one I'm getting really close on. That's the one I was eying up from the start.

I shot this last year. I wish I could have shot it this week to match this one....

I'm still working, about 100 photos so far, my wife is about to put an end to it. Thank God!

I'm having more fun with this challenge than I have in ages (probably since Mother). I'm learning a ton, too.

One question: what do you think the voting will be like re: accuracy? Are people going to be strict about tributes being an exact duplicate of the ribbon-winning image, or do you think it'll be seen as more of an opportunity to a certain technique or subject and do our own interpretation of it? How are you planning to vote?

I'm in. Got a good shot, but I'm a little concerned that there are going to be TONS of people submitting the same one as me! :/
03/19/2006 12:16:56 PM · #64
I think when it comes to voting, most won't even bother looking at the ribbon photo that the tribute is made from. I think with time constraints and all, most will vote just like usual, taking what they perceive to be the best photo in the challenge, and giving it high scores.
I have eyed one that I might consider doing, but I also made myself a promise yesterday to take off a few weeks from challenges. It is hard to turn my back on challenges, they are so cool, but I have two costumes to make for my daughter (she is into anime and needs them for a trip to Boston in May) and I have my brothers 50th birthday barbecue to plan. Well, I must, must must focus on something else besides photography. Lets hope I can stick to my resolve.

I'm in, this is going to be a fun challenge to vote.
03/19/2006 12:53:15 PM · #66
In as well, but must admit... after trying some of the more difficult winners, decided to go with an easier one (still took 30 shots to get one that I was reasonably happy with... keyword is reasonably).

Renewed respect for ribon winners abound.

I can't wait! LOL I'd actually been planning to do a tribute just like this anyway, so I just hope I can pull it off in time. If the weather will just cooperate... teehee

Challenge Topic: Pay tribute to a previous ribbon-winning image, either by imitation or parody.

"Imitation" is not the same as "copying"; I'm not gonna vote down for differences, if the spirit is there. I'm more concerned about the "familiarity" of the original affecting voting; the one I chose is not very familiar at all...

After attemping four different ribbon winners and 152 photographs...I.AM.IN.

Can we start a thread of the unused outtakes now, or should we wait? One of mine is pretty darn funny. I could have entered it as a parody, but it probably would have done miserably.

lets not forget that the photo could also be a PARODY of the original.
When voting, cut the submissions a little slack, I think.

Shot mine today and it is DEFINITELY a parody! I think its funny and cute... we'll see how the vote goes.

LOL she's on strike. She wants a new dressing room and white M&Ms!
Terry shot her yesterday: but she didn't care and walked away. :P
