NO ANIMALS WERE HURT DURING THIS SHOOT!

All the traps in this shot (although set) were tied up so that they could not be triggered and I had an assistant handling the mouse just as an extra caution to keep the mouse off the traps.

This was shot at iso 500 because I messed up and did not change my camera back to its lowest iso.

Post processing was just a few minor tweaks to the raw file in nikon capture and then I cropped a fairly small amount off the image in photoshop.

It was interesting to see that the mouse had no interest at all in the cheese.

Thanks to all those that voted highly on this. This is certainly an improvement over my first submission which ranked 210 out of around 220. I guess it paid off to actually go buy a live mouse. Though that worked out anyways because my wife really liked the mouse and is keeping it for a pet.

Great shot - colour (ie mouse, - the jump out colour of cheese on traps.Congrats. Thanks for sharing the behind- the- scene info as many do not realize all the hard work /effort that goes in to getting the shot.

This image bothers me, as its so cliché and overused. I do believe I saw QUITE a few images similar to this one, and while it was the best of the lot, its apparent lack of creativity is irksome.
12/21/2005 01:41:33 PM
I was afraid these traps were really active during the shot, so glad they weren't, didn't affect my voting though, great shot! Congratulations.

The live critter counts, hope it survived the gauntlet. There's too much out-of-focus foreground - more DOF would have made this great.

Great shot, I like how you got a shallow DOF, but still mananged to get the mouse and one of the traps in perfect focus..

This is just a phenominal photograph. The sharpness is just incredible on the mouse and the central mouse trap and the colors are just incredible. Great job, I can't imagine how to improve it. 10!

Nice set up, but the white specs are a little distracting. One of my favs in the challenge.

7 - Very good & seemingly very dangerous (couldn't see any evidence of safeguards). Criticism; not much, maybe more selective cropping (eg on the left) perhaps an even slightly sharper angle and, difficult, but having the 'focal point(s)' more centered in the frame, may have all made this even better in my opinion. Good set up & idea (well done if original).

The trap in the front should, in my oppinion, be more in focus but everything else is very good and I really like the idea.

12/14/2005 02:26:02 PM
the composition is rather disordered. The traps of the front are fuzzy

Very good! If that is a real mouse (sure looks like it, but not sure), how the heck did you keep it from snapping any traps? One of my favorites. 10

Without a doubt, the best in the challenge and best met in the topic in the challenge. Seen others try, but this hits it. Great composition, assembly of traps. Technically, great colors (choice of traps and cheese), and DOF.

Oh yeah - nice photo too. Nice use of DOF and ROT in your composition. Lighting is right on as is the focal point.
