Gawd, that's impossible for me. I'm a happy-go-lucky, damn-the-voters-full-speed-ahead enterer-of-challenges, and I've been in 131 of them so far; 5.4 average. If I averaged 6.0 for the next 131 challenges, that's raise my average to 5.7. It ain't gonna happen. To keep that sort of an average I'd have to cherry-pick challenges, and then it would take forever to get 131 more in :-)
I'll just keep giggling along and cherish my occasional high score.

I'm yearning for a rubber duckie ribbon - it's just so cool to have one!
Lets pester Langdon for one of those, hehe

Hehehehehe! But Bear lest we forget that you are an accomplished photographer and enter challenges just for kicks. Look at GeneralE. He does the same. Just for kicks and shooting the breeze. Now if we had more Literary Challenges where you would score your second best score, then you'll get there in no time ;P
I do agree though that it's tough to raise and "maintain" your average. I haven't been picky with the challenges. I enter both of them every week. Sometimes I throw the scores out the window just to prove a point or to try a new technique but for the most part, I am always aiming for the 6 in all my challenges. The 7+ scores are nice but hard to come by ;) |

I wonder how it feels to have many ribbons, like many of the regulars here? I HOPE I can find out someday.
But what does it really mean to have a lot of ribbons?
To yourself?
Would you subconsciously make a connection that you are kinda better than most people?
Please, i'm not trying to say ppl here with lotsa ribbons are arrogant!
On the contrary. I personally think ppl with lots of ribbons deserve them, and yes, they are better than me, i'll even admit it.
But isnt it a fact though? If you have 5 or more ribbons, damn, you really do have some skill/talent (i'll even go so far as to say equipment in some cases) that ppl without ribbons dont have, or are aspiring to have. So how do you handle that?
I suppose it boils down to your character trait in the end. To remain humble and not let it develop into a kind of god-complex.
Damn, am I rambling this morning or what? :)

I've come tantalizingly close to the brown several times. I'd even venture to say that I have the very best bottom-of-the-pile-image, quality-wise, in DPC history :-)

The ribbons are just badges of merit in my opinion. Whether a person ribbons or not is not an issue for me. Consistency is key. Some people have ribboned and almost vanish in the background. There are others who are consistent and it's just a matter of time before they blossom and hit pay dirt. Calliopekel is one of them. Highly consistent in the challenges yet the ribbon eludes her.
I certainly don't think, personally, having ribbons makes me better than others who don't. I just got lucky that's all. I entered the right challenges with a strong and appealing image that people voted high for my entries. The thrill of winning ribbons in three consecutive weeks was mind boggling for me. Do I yearn for more? Of course. Everyone aims for that but the secret is having the humility to accept your wins and losses. that to me makes a photographer a great one - ribbon or no ribbbon ;) |

Lucky?
Is that another word for sheer and unique talent?
