This year, on Saturday-Sunday, October 14-15, I will be walking in my third MS Challenge Walk. The walk is a 2-day, ~50km (30 mile) event in the Brandywine Valley (just outside Philadelphia, and will take us through plenty of photo-worthy locations. Saturday night lodging is provided at the DoubleTree hotel in Wilmington, DE.

As always, I am walking in honor of my close friend (and fellow DPC member) BAMartin. I also walk as a member Pam's Posse. Team captain Pam Gifford, who has MS herself, will also be doing her third walk this year. Pam is a great friend, a natural leader, and a true inspiration to me, and I'm very lucky to be part of her team. With Pam's leadership, it's no surprise this team has been the highest fundraising team for the walk for 2 years in a row.

Walkers are committed to raise a minimum of $1,500. There is also a $75 registration fee to participate ($65 if you register by March 31).

If you'd like to join me on this walk, please visit my personal walk page and click the "Join My Team" link (or just click here). The form will pre-fill with the Pam's Posse team code of PAEWPPMF01.

If you are not able to join me, but would like to help find a cure for MS, as well as improve the quality of life for people living with MS right now, please consider making a donation instead. You can donate online by going to my personal walk page and clicking the "sponsor me" link (or just click here). If you would like to donate by other means (check, money order, paypal, etc), please PM me and I will send you my mailing address. If you are so inclined, a donation of $50 ($1/km) will go a long way toward helping me meet my fundraising goal, and more importantly toward finding a cure, but feel free to donate any amount you are comfortable with. No donation is too small, and every dollar helps!

Thanks, and I hope to see you on October 14!

~Terry

I enjoy watching you raise your goal for this every year. $2500 is a lofty goal but I know you can make it. I will contribute again this year as I have in the past.

Sometime in the next few weeks, I will have a 'commemorative' print put together for this event. All proceeds from the print sale will be donated to your campaign.

Good luck :)

That is such a huge commitment Terry. One which people right around the world with MS appreciate. Having had that for nine years (this year) .. I know that it is all of the research worldwide that will help find a cure fo way forward for those of us with this lovely wee disease/challenge.

Cheers
Kari (I will ensure that I sponsor before the due date)

Thanks Kari! Yes, this is a major commitment, but many have told me that I should be committed, so it may as well be to this.

Jokes aside, the fundraising and the walk are a lot of work, but the feeling of accomplishment that comes from successfully completing a challenge like this is indescribable. Everyone I know who has participated in this walk has come out of it with a new sense of self and of purpose, and has learned to question what they formerly believed to be the limits of their abilities. I can't say enough about what a great experience this walk truly is, and I heartily recommend it to anyone.

If there's anyone you know who might like to donate, please feel free to pass them the link to my page. In any case, consider me walking in your name as well. :)

Hey Terry. Great to see you participating in the fundraising again for this great cause. I decided to use $50 of my beer fund to support you again this year. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Just so folks know, the MS Society is one of the best I've seen at not only raising funds, but using those funds well and wisely. About a week before Terry does his walk, I'll be doing my third Bike to the Beach - 150 miles in two days from San Antonio to Corpus Christi, Texas.

We don't get plush lodging, though. We get to sleep either in tents or on the gym floor at a college in between the two cities. :-)

But my point is (and I do have a point) that the local chapters here in Texas benefit from not only this ride, but ones in the Houston and Dallas areas as well. We have several folks at work with MS and the local chapter has worked miracles to get them chairs when the need arises, medication when the insurance companies balk,. and other benefits.

So Terry, best of luck to you. To everyone else who's so inclined, give Terry your support. And if you hear of a local event such as a Walk or a Ride in your area, please sponsor someone who's participating.

Deb,

Up until last year they've housed us in the cabins of an overnight camp, and I can tell you from experience that spending a night in a too-small bed in an unheated cabin in the chill of a Pennsylvania October night is quite an experience.

The numbers of walkers have been falling off for the last couple years, and several changes to the walk were made to help increase participation. The route was changed, and of course the housing as well.

Still, I always looked at camp as part of the experience, and to be honest I'm going to miss that part of it.

I agree with your assessment of the MS Society. I think they're an extraordinarily well-run organization and have always been impressed with how well they put their resources to use. As with the MS 150 rides, the walks help not only the chapters in which they are located, but people with MS throughout the world -- The National Multiple Sclerosis Society is the largest non-governmental sponsor of MS research in the world.

Best of luck on your ride.

We have several DPC members that benefit directly from the research that is funded by your donations. Please consider any amount...no matter how small...because we take care of family. :)

Very true! :)

I started walking for our own BAMartin, but there are several others here who have MS, and I walk in their honor as well.

It now looks like mcrochip might join me as well... anyone else want to join me or sponsor me!

terry, i walk on the ms challenge in nova scotia. i've had it for 14 years, and am still going strong. (knocks wood) i'm so glad to hear such great response for your walk. woohoo!

ps - what is this 'bump'?
04/05/2006 09:21:42 PM · #25
Hi Christian,

Glad to hear you're doing well!

So far the fundraising is going well here, and fellow DPC'er mcrochip will be walking with me as well!

A "bump" is a post made to move a thread up to the top of the recent threads list. Some people have bumped the thread in hopes of convincing people to sponsor me. ;-)
