Hmmmm, thanks for all the input. Ansd I am seriously considering the trip.
But no one is answering my question:
Is it COLD at that time of year in Palo Duro Canyon ?
Oh, yes Gordon. I remember running out of gas once on a regularly scheduled airline. We made our pit stop in Lincoln, Nebraska. They wouldn't let us off the plane. |

well, it is the panhandle of TX, so I imagine it will actually be quite warm already. We haven't had much of a winter here in region. Oklahoma city(where I live) is usually 5-10 degrees cooler than the panhandle, and I don't hesitiate to plan overnight camping trips in march. It might be a little brisk at night, but probably a little too hot during an afternoon hike. Understand that is NORMAL weather. we could always have a freak cold front, and it could be 10 below zero. very unlikely.

Thanks, Nova. After looking at your forecast and checking Google a bit, I think this fair weather photographer will pass this time around. But if you guys do this again I'll be on the look out.

I'm still super excited! I had planned on going out there the first weekend after the new year, but it was too cold. Perhaps a couple of months will allow a little warmer weather. January is a difficult month to go camping.

Amarillo's weather can be unpredictable. It can be warm enough for shirt sleeve weather in March. It can be extremely windy (think dirt coloring the sky red) or you can have a blizzard. I grew up in Amarillo and Palo Duro Canyon is an amazing place.
Most airlines do fly to Amarillo "International" Airport - although some use commuter planes. Southwest Airlines still flies full sized jets.
The hotels in Canyon are probably closer than the ones in Amarillo, but it is only about a 15-30 minute drive to get to the Canyon. There are also some cabins in the park - built during the depression years, but fixed up nicely for lodging. Call the park reservation service to check availiability. |

I was coming from Vegas, back to Austin, via Dallas. Lots of thunderstorms in Dallas - nowhere to land.
Took 15 hours to fly from Vegas to Austin in the end :( |

I was coming back from Dallas from Vegas once and the co-pilot had a heart attack and died on the way. Could see them doing CPR up in the cockpit from my seat... took about 15 hours to get home as well, as we landed in BFE and had to wait for a new crew in order to fly the rest the way home... ah the joys of travel.

If any admins are about, would you please change the date in the title to March 11-14, 2006? We plan to stay an additional night to catch sunrise on the 14th.
I'm working on an itinerary and would love some input from you guys that plan to be there! :)

Is anyone opposed to trying to schedule a trail ride or a wagon ride through the canyon? |

I'd like to but I really can't. My family lives in South Texas which is where I'm going Memorial Day week.

Looks like a neat place but it is an 8 hr drive from San Antonio.
For those wondering about the weather there you can check out the weather at Intellicast. |

Anyone else up for this? So far only three (including me) are saying they are going, and that's barely a GTG. C'mon, guys...there have to be more of you than this! :) |

I had thought about it! :) But the drive was 19 hours :/
Plus Troy is having oral surgery (wisdom teeth) tomorrow.

OK...since there is such little interest for this time period, how about changing it to mid-June? Would that work better for more people?? |

I guess the lack of responses tells me to scrap the entire idea. Never mind...maybe someone else can gather more interest in a Texas GTG. :) |
