I'm gonna predict a high score for Konador :-) He's got quite the collection of abstracts going on his PAD.

According to whoever wrote the description, that would be true.

nshapiro is the one that inspired me to do abstracts in the first place....I love his work...

I think I might shoot mine tonight...I have a couple of good, unique, ideas floating around...

....challenge description is a quite accurate definition for visual media. I am pleased.

It's simply one of many definitions.

the description is simple, accurate and to the point, obviously the intrepretation of a definition for abstract will be illustrated by those who submit. I also would expect quite a few different kinds.

Absolutely ΓΆ€” many would call these abstracts, including me:

But in all of them except the water-droplet shot, the "subject" is to some extent identifiable; and some would say the water drops ARE the subject and they are (by this challenge's definition) not abstract.

I don't have any quarrel with the limiting definition, however, assuming the voters actually pay attention to it :-)

It wasn't raining yesterday so I took a lunch-time walk down to a spot I've previuosly photographed (not for a challenge) with my P&S. I was going for a certain, abstract effect, but sadly my P&S wasn't able to handle it. Too much grain & it couldn't get the transitions I was after. I was very disappointed.

I'm extremely happy with the way my new camera captured exactly what I was after. I'm very happy with the result. Happier than I have been with the result of any challenge entry to date.

I managed to catch exactly what I saw in my minds-eye for the first time ever, which is a very empowering feeling I've never fealt before.

I'm curious to see what type of reaction it might get, if any. I don't have high hopes, as there's no voter's-context to the shot. Bummer I got this so much earlier than usual, which means more time to wait for the voting to start.

Oh, it's really the right shot for me! I saw a couple of natural blemishes on it just now that I could heal out. Maybe with a coffee on Saturday or Sunday...

See!? It starts with a blemish here, then a wrinkle there, before you know it your finished product looks nothing like the original. Don't fret, you still have plenty of time. He-he. ;^)

Here's a question for you....

My submission for this is unlikely to be recognizable to anyone, but as much because it is an unusual subject as the way I captured the image. So, does this make it abstract or does it just mean that I had access to something weird to shoot??

Just remember what the challenge details say:

Challenge Details: Abstracts are about lines, shapes and colors. If it is recognizable as an object - it is not an abstract.

Actually, that's unfortunate.

The definition for abstract is worded in absolute terms, which was originally meant to eliminate a class shots which people call abstracts, but which don't meet a simple test. The test is this:

When you first look at the shot, what do you see? Do you see the objects as you know them, or do you FIRST see the shapes, the curves and lines, the colors, and then later (maybe) recognize the object as something you know?

The test is NOT whether or not you can "eventually" recognize what was shot.

I'll take the blame for submitting the original "strict" challenge wording. Last march, I put in a challenge request for Abstract II - The Sequel, with revised wording:

"Take an abstract photo, where colors, geometry, and patterns stand out more strongly than the recognition of any objects, if there are any that are recognizable at all. "

This was meant to remedy the problem where, after staring at the photo for a while, once people realized what they were looking at, you got marked as DNMC.
