I was going back through some of my archives and found a few photos I did with my old Nikon CoolPix 950. Just wanted to share a few to give the P&S shooters a little inspiration. The 950 is only a 2 megapixel camera and by today's standards for a P&S is mediocre at best. But, boy did I love that little camera.

The first and third photos are both straight from the camera.

Haha...I still use my Coolpix 950, I love that thing to death. As a matter of fact my highest scoring photo was done with it, lol.

Nice shots btw...I especially like the last one, nice use of the flash...

Wow, you did make that little thing do some good work.

I still try to use mine on occasion... but the battery door is broken and ducttape only hold it shut for so long ... lol

Yeah...the battery door on mine always falls open then my batteries go everywhere, lol.

I don't have a good camera at the moment, I'm getting my new one in about a week, so I've been forced to use this beast for awhile. I don't mind though...it just makes me think that much more creatively.

OMG, I have flower pics... LOL... I did get carried away with that little thing.

I'm still using the same P&S my family got in 2002 (well, not EXACTLY the same...it was picked out of my pocket at a convention that summer but we replaced it with the same camera). No matter how much I play with my friend's Rebel or the Finepix S5900 my parents have at home, I still can't let this thing go. Because it's cheap and almost completely worthless, I'm not afraid to just toss it in my bag wherever I go, it's been dropped and kicked around so much but still works just fine, with the exceptions of a few dead pixels here and there...

I'm not really looking to make print-quality photos, I just take them for web display and my own enjoyment, and I've taken so many shots that I'm extremely fond of.

Seriouslyman, point and shoots rock :D

Well... I had a samsung digimax 301... I loved that little thing...

It wasn't the great deal, but I loved to play with it.

I love my P&S. 4 of my top highest scores are from either my Pentax or Panasonic. Haven't touched my Rebel since I got my Panasonic. Well, okay I did about a month ago and it just made me mad so I put it back. Why I hold onto it is a mystery.

Many people still use their Coolpix 950, and even still seek it out on ebay, because of it's very high sensitivity to the infrared frequencies. Slap on a Hoya R72 filter and you have a handholdable camera with shutter speeds around 1/30 to 1/60th sec. You can now purchase a Cokin IR-P filter for about $55, which you can also use on your other cameras as well, but you'll have to use a tripod with those. The 950 also comes in handy with IR because of it's LCD preview which is good because an IR filter can make an optical viewfinder very difficult to use.

I use the R72 on mine all the time...the portrait of me higher up in the thread was done in infrared. I shoot IR handheld with it quite a bit actually. But really...if you want the best in IR photography get the Olympus 2020z...it can't be beat, just look at Marbo's profile, lol. The 950 is in a close second though, and performs quite well. Also the other camera I have, the DiMAGE 7...it's one of the only new cameras that is sensitive to IR, but I've never tried anything with it.

I'm selling my 950 thought when I get my new camera. I bought it for 50 bucks a while back, If I sell it along with the Hoya filter and a coupla memory cards I'll probably end up making over $150 easy. Not too bad for an old 2mp camera:P

I always wanted to try an IR filter over the 950's lens and over my SB-80 flash and see if I could do flash photography with no visibble light emitted, but never got around to it...

Might have to try it. Anyone ever tried this?
01/20/2006 02:48:21 PM · #12
I've never tried IR with a flash, but I have two work lamps I use for portraits and stuff. I think it's easier to hae a constant light if you are doing indoor IR photography, that way you can see what the results will be like in the LCD.

If I had a decent off camera flash I would give your idea a try...alas...I do not:(

is the 950 the one with the swivel lens that sounded like the cadillac when it focused?

or was that the 990...

Love my little P&S. Totally underrated sometimes but produces stunning images still ;)

They both had that swivel design and yes they are a little clunky sounding when focusing.

I loved my Canon A70 when I had it. Third camera, but the first two were very low-end ones (a Polaroid for $80 in 2001, then a Canon A100 for $150 the next year).
