i was asked to hand over my camera at a factory compound once... i had a film camera with me too, and they didnt see the digi i hid when i saw them coming to block the gate out. i agreed to hand them the film, and leave quickly. at first they wanted me and my friend to come to the 'office' with them...

I trespassed to get this shot:

No one caught me...but I did fall in the mud twice. I'm pretty sure I weighed an extra 20 pounds when I was done because of the rain and mud. I had to trek like 2 miles form where I parked my car...and it started pouring rain out when I got there. It was pretty messy.

I shoved my camera under my shurt to protect it on the way back...

Overall though...good times.

Good tip there from SaintAugust. If you want to go take risky pictures, it never hurts to have a mock Film DSLR around your neck. They can be picked up for fairly cheap and you can get a cheap lens to clamp on the front too.

"Wow, I really didn't know this was private property... I'm really sorry. Look, I just got started, but I can give you the film I was using and we can part ways - you won't ever see me again."

:)

Trespassing... to get "the shot"

Or to get shot....?

Cops are not the only thing you have to worry about.

Be careful stepping foot on private property.

If I'm sure the shot is worth it, the trespassing is harmless, the odds of getting caught is low, and I'm not invading anyone's privacy, why not?

Sorry, I wasn't responding to you post intentionally. :)

This is just my thought on it. No harm no foul. I agree with you 100% though, especially here in the wild west where a lot of people are packing.

I watched a program on Court TV last night that goes hand-in-hand with this challenge. It was called 'Video Vigilantes', did anyone else see it?

They were talking about taking video, still pictures, and audio of people and how did it effect their privacy. A few thing that stood out was:
1. If you are on public property and can see a person in their house doing drugs you can take the picture without invading their privacy. BUT if you step on their property to get the shot then you are invading.
2. If you are on public property and so is a persons automobile and you open the door and take a picture, you have invaded a persons privacy by trespassing.

It's all about 'ones expectation of privacy'. I bet there will be several shots that cross the line :P

EDIT: Don't forget that most public schools have a 100 ft. buffer zone so even though you may be on public property you still are trespassing by invading the buffer zone.

nope not caught just running from the guards dogs and hoping back over the fence, and another time I thought I could take on this big security guard till I got smart and took off before he called the cops

I do this all the time. Lots of climbing over barbed wire, trampling fields to get that perfect shot. I have been approached several times by property owners, and with just a little bit of talking things usually go well. The best thing to do is show them your LCD of your prize winning pics. I usually give them a card and tell them I will give them a print. Often when I jump the fence to chase that shot, after that initial contact I often find them telling me when to come to get a better shot of the subject, or "you think MY barn looks bad, you should check out the Mizell farm." Just be careful. When they approach don't look fearful, but definately don't be cocky. I just act excited to see them to show off my prize pic.

. Exactly.

Most ranch, land owners have weapons.

have you ever thought of just asking permission from the property owner? I do risky stuff, but when it comes to someone's property I try to respect it. If there are any people around I would prefer they give permission rather than tick them off. But, that's just me.
Oh - if you're ever in Humboldt Twp., MI - please come knock on my door before slipping around the property.....we have about 13-14 rifles here and several handguns. Never know when one might go off accidentally. ;P

Be advised, in rural areas, such as this, some folks just shoot first, and ask questions later, also you never know when your gonna run afoul of someones "illegal substance production facility" or not so freindly family pet. :-) Happy trespassing!

It sure does! ;-)

It's always good to lie in the hospital when you cut up your hands on a spiked fence tresspassing into an abandoned psyc ward... Hahaha

"Uhh yeah, you know those spikes on old tripods to secure it in the ground? Mine got caught in a door and jabbed into me..."

But it was worth it... Wasn't it, Matt? :-D
