Maybe I didn't get enough sleep or the fact that I havent entered a challenge in a while has affected my skew on comments, but don't you think we should also be able to deem a comment "not helpful"?

I think you do that by not saying it is helpful.

I guess it is just a more positive way of saying it 8^)

If there was a counter for comments that people found rude, crude or hurtful, some folks would try to "win" the honor of the most rude comments. The folks that make nasty comments crave attention. I think it has something to do with how they were potty trained. Best way to stop them is to ignore them.

Good point, I have made 112 comments and only 30 of them have been deemed helpful. Now I'm not saying that all 112 have been great or helpful but I'd like more feedback. Sometimes I feel like I'm writting these comments for no reason at all. Anyway, lets say that someone can mark a comment bad but there's no tally on the profile for bad comments. The only tally is the helpful ones. That way if someone says something bad and you go to there profile and see they have commented 300 times and have only 1 helpful comment you know they're probably not the best commenter. Take away the chance to show off the bad comments. Basiclly leave the profile page alone but give the commentee the right to say the comment is bad or helpful or no opinion. I hope that makes sense, I also think people may be less inclined to write "Too dark" or other famous one liners. I am guilty myself but I have tried to get away from it.

People only have so much time in a day. If they spent all of the time on a computer, no one would take pictures. I think if you put a comment on a picture, most likely it would be read. And is helpful. But the photographer probably would much rather go out and try to fix what may be wrong or apply what they learned from the comment to other photos and make better ones, rather than deeming each and every comment helpful or not.

I agree and disagree. I'm not talking about someone spending the entire day in front of the monitor. I personally think I grow as a photographer from the comments I give and receive. I like letting people know that what they said was meaningful or not. But you know what if I don't like a comment I can always send a private message to them too. So either way its no big deal but I'd be for it.

By not marking a comment as helpful, I don't always mean that the comment is worthless by any means. I'll take all the simple "interesting" "uneventful" "cool shot" "boring" comments people have to give.. but I tend to only mark comments as helpful that offer more specific suggestions and such. It seems a little unfair for people who write extensive reactions and suggestions to get the same feedback as commenters who give one or two words. However, I'm greatly appreciative of the new helpful comment system as it is. It was a great addition, and having multiple levels of comment helpfulness rating might just be too much of a hassle.
