What you do if your girlfriend went bald on purpose? As in shaved her head? How would you think? Or if you're a parent with a perfectly fine daughter, what would you do?

On my 20th birthday, I'm cutting off my hair and shaving it. My parents are not overly joyed about it. My friends think I'm nuts. I don't really care, because that's how I am at times. I'll be under no one's supervision by the end of Febuary since I'll be away overseas in university.

My dad told me to tell the university conselor of my purpose on shaving my head. Or else they think I've gone mad and I can't take university life. I feel I have no need to.

Maybe I think differently. I'm going to donate my hair to the locks of love, and liberate myself from a materialistic world (more or less), as in obsession with hair.

You'll have to discard all material things. Including your clothes.

.... You could always tell them it's for religious reasons.

Shave it? Yea, I would think it's a bit odd for a girl as well. I didn't care for Sinead O'Connors either. :-) But...it's your hair and you can ultimately do what you want. I'm also planning on donating my hair to Locks of Love. I have a couple inches to go so that when it is cut, I will still be at shoulder length. It's for a good cause.

I was seriously thinking about that. I discussed it, and changed a few priorities. If you meant that as a joke or not, well I laughed.

My dad made me feel guilty, so I had to save it for my later years, after I'm 50. I'd probably be like Jungle Jane. Lol

It really depends on your head. I've shaved my head for years (but I'm a guy) and everyone says I look much better without hair than with - whereas some people look really bad with a shaved head.

Some women can look very beautiful with a shaved head. There's a super model (can't think of her name) and Natalie Portman is going bald in her next movie. I'd say don't worry about it.

Of note, I did this once...but I've also heard a lot of really "iffy" things about "locks of love". Not sure if I buy all of it or not. But you may just want to scour the web a bit more.

PS- I also suggest leaving the bangs. I've seen such done and it's quite cute...sexy even.

Shave it if that's what moves you...just remember that the freshly-shaved scalp will be rather odd in color and take a little while to become even with the rest of your skin tone. My nephew shaved his head and it was this weird grey color for about 2 weeks until he got some sun and the color evened out. He was probably fairer-skinned than you, but it's something to think about.

I am with Megatherian .. It reakky depends on the shape of your head, but also your ears. I shaved most of my hair at one stage or another .. it shocked no one (no shock value in doing it). I did leave hair a little on top ... so it depends on your analysis of why you are doing it. I think going to a university conselor is a boring move and something parents would save ... having seen varsity students in NZ they also would think you more than normal .. cos some of what they do is real weird. Oh well heres to personal choice.

Well...if I really cared for/loved the person, it is the person inside I am in love with, not the hair on her head. Would make no difference if it is what made her happy.

To me, bald looks clean, honest, sexy and hip. I love to see someone's face without the decorum. It's infinitely practical too.

My daughter (16) doesn't feel this way at all. As a matter of fact, I don't know anyone who shares my tastes or views. Everything is as it should be.

Post a headshot of yourself, I'm sure we can photoshop up a preview of what you'd look like ;)

I say go for it if its what your soul is saying to do. I have been shaving my head (wow) it'll be 4 years this march. I turned 32, was in a place in my life where I didnt have anyone to answer to or please other than myself. Its something I had been wanting to do since highschool (loved Sinnead's courage and beauty)

Now you were asking about guys reactions: I've had a variety of reactions to this.. Some guys just dont get it and look at you like yer mad.. others are like Wow thats so cool, then (because I wear a variety of wigs as well) some ask for long hair, red hair, blonde etc.. and have fun with the entire idea. Some guys just like massaging my bald head with oils etc.. but let me tell you now if your (i'm assuming), free spirit is okay with it the people who matter or will come to matter, within your life will be okay with it as well... those who dont get it.. likely wouldnt fit into the circle you create for yourself anyway.

Parents.. Mine gave up trying to figure me out ages ago they just accept my quirky ways.. my dad is actually the one who first shaved my head!! lol My mom sat there shaking her head and said: Oh Rozzy.. with a big smile.

I say go for it.. (listen to your own gut and forget what the world thinks for a minute) its liberating, its fun, and if there is an occassion where you want hair.. buy a wig.. they are affordable, fun and look better than they used to in the 50's lol

Good luck .. looking forward to the pics ;)

**edits were spelling and redundant stuff** lol

One of my good female friends is bald for no reason other than she got annoyed with her hair one day, so she shaved it off and liked it.
Its none of anyones business why you style your hair this way or that.
You wouldnt go to your university councellor and say i'm going to get bangs, or streak my hair, why on earth would you need to tell them youre shaving it?
Also lying about it (ie saying religious reasons) is kinda dumb. Tell the truth. If you can't be true to yourself, then whats the point?

If it's something you feel strongly about -- do it (with requisite before and after photos, of course).

I don't know what "things" have been heard about 'Locks for Love', but it really doesn't matter if there are some less than pleasing aspects of it. The same can be said of any organized effort. Ultimately, your reasons for doing far outweight what is done.

I also agree completely with Ralph on this -- it grows back! It is not permanent, should you decide to not stay domed.

I say go for it. Locks of Love is a wonderful program and they are always needing hair. But you do have to find a salon that is affilitated with the Locks of Love program and tell them in advance that you wish to donate your hair. If your hair touches the ground, it can't be used and they have to have at least ten inches. Check out more here.

edited for inches correctness :)

Bald is beautiful......MWUHAHAHA

Could go either way.

GI Jane was way hot, Sinead OConner was not.

Heh, it isn't permanent. If you don't like it, then it'll grow back. If you love it, then you might start a trend. If it liberates you, then do it. If it makes you happy, then do it. I think it's a gutsy move and it might be life changing... who knows.

Wear cool jewelry. Maybe get a henna on your head! Or none of the above. Enjoy it... life's too short to spend it saying "what if."

Don't listen to anyone that says it's weird for a girl. Wtf is that, anyway? I've gone bald, mohawked, inverted mohawk (but only for a day, it was too friar tuck), did the whole punk girl thang with the little bangs and nada else, done everything possible to my hair and felt great doing it. It isn't a big deal. But get ready for negative attention anyway. Now I've got long ass locks and I can't really imagine cutting it at all. So instead of cuts, I did color. Blue, green, purple, and all at once. Now I'm just black, black as night. I got lazy, stopped wanting to deal with the whole process. But feel free to experiment and express yourself, it's your body yaknow. Only you can say if it matters one way or the other. I just hope you don't have a lumpy head ;)

Well, since my kids were about 5, i've let them do whatever they want with their hair. My son spent his summer vacation after 1st grade with a purple and green mohawk. 2 days after school started, he wanted me to take him for a haircut, because the other kids teased him. :P He hasn't wanted an "off the wall" hairstyle since.

My daughter has been dying her hair since she was 12. Her choice, tho i think it's frying her hair. She has a new color every 3 months.

I've been tempted to shave my head, often. Haven't ever been brave enough to do it. However, 2 years ago, I had my hip length hair cut to my chin, and donated it to locks of love. It's a good cause, and kudos to you if you do shave your head. :)

I shaved my ass once. It looked very nice. I tried to donate the hair, but nobody would take it.
