Well 2006 could not have started off worse than it has so far.
On a leisurly new year's day trip to the tobogan hill, my 20D got "dropped" and sat on in a freak accident that has left one lense damaged (Tamron 18-200) and my 20D acting EXTREMELY strange and not allowing any photos to be taken.
As our trip the the hill came to a close, I decided to take a trip down the hill. Up until then, I had only been taking photos, while the kids flew down the hill. Obviously not wanting to take my cam with me, I put it in it's case and asked a friend to hold it. My friend was holding his video camera and wanted to film me going down the icy slope. So he did, and as I wizzed by him, he turned to follow me down the rest of the hill. As he had his back turned to the hill, he gets taken out by a couple of toboganers going down the hill...backwards. His legs fly out from under him and he lands flat on his back. I get off my tobogan and turn to see him tangled up in a mess of toboganers, sprawled on his back, in quite a bit of pain. He appears to have pulled a muscle in his back. Since it was our last run of the day, we get him to the car and head home for some well deserved hot chocolate to heal his bruised ego and back.
Later on, when I finally got a chance to inspect the camera, I find that the lens barrel of the Tamron lens is now crooked. I turn on the camera, and get an Error 99 message, so I pop out the battery, and reinsert it. What happened next gave me shivers up my spine. The camera, though still powered OFF, starts shooting at 5 fps....NON STOP.
I quickly remove the battery, which stops the shutter, but if I reinsert, it continues. If I remove the lens, the camera will power up without triggering the shutter, but I cannot take a photo. The camera will allow me to change settings using the AWB/ISO/Meter buttons and dials, but the trigger will not override and allow it to enter shooting mode. I've tried different lenses, and different batteries, but nothing changes.
Needless to say, I'm devastated. And so is my friend, back pain and all. Obviously, I do not hold him responsible, as this was some freak accident, but I'm devastated anyway.
I'll be sending the camera to Canon on Tuesday, but have NO IDEA what might be causing this, given that there is NO indication of impact or other to the camera body.
2006 better get better than this, or it'll be a LONG year.
;-(

Not that I could have passed it on warranty anyhow...
Anybody ever heard of such a reaction be being dropped?
As for my shooting, I'll still be able to since I kept my DRebel when I upgraded. Actually, I gave it to my wife, but she seldomly uses it. She said I could use hers in the meantime. :) I just hope I don't get any offers for studio/product work in the near future, since the Rebel doesn't have a strobe trigger connector.

check with your home owner's insurance. My agent told me once that because I have replacement coverage on everything in the home, that even if I take my camera somewhere and it gets damaged or stolen, they will replace it.

Other than the main battery does your camera have the small coin cell for memory backup. If so try removing it too. I would remove both batteries and let it set for at least an hour probably overnight, then try again. Just a suggestion.
And yes try your homeowners. Mine considers my camera to be a computer accessory and my policy covers anything computer related except software.
Hope everything works out and your camera comes back to life soon.

That stinks. As a worst case scenario you may be able to take legal action against the irresponsible idiots who were going down hill backwards. In general I am against litigation but in this case irresponsible behavior should be held accountable.

If you decide to go the insurance route, be sure to fully discuss it with your agent. When I moved to SLR, I asked my agent if I needed any extra insurance and they told me that it was covered on my homeowners, but.....they recommended that if anything happened, I would probably be better off not placing a claim, as it could affect my premiums.
Sorry to hear about the accident. I hope your friend is okay. That's two New Years camera problems I've heard about. My brother-in-law and I went shooting yesterday morning and his 10D wouldn't power on at all. He's sending it off to Canon as well.
Good luck. |

Careful using that though... When you sell your house it shows up as a claim and can make it hard or expensive for the buyer to get insurance (depending on what insurance company they use), thus they might not want to buy your house because of that. If you are not planning on selling your house anytime soon, no worries.
Sorry to hear of your loss Mariomel. Hopefully that's the worst thing that happens to you in 2006. |

Bummer....
I mean, at least if the 5fps had started earlier and you could have converted the images to a movie and sent it in to the funniest videos, you might have had a chance at winning $10,000 and replacing it with an 1Ds MKII.
But that sounds like no fun...

En espérent que ton ami se rétablisse mentalement et physiquement. And surely hope your camera gets better soon. But like others have said it can be on your house insurance, but be carefull of extra claims.

This is true for repeated claims to the actual structure that have gone unrepaired (ie perenially leaking roof) - claims for personal property can be overlooked especially if they occurred outside of the residence premises. |

This is why you should carry insurance on your camera. It covers everything, or at least mine does with statefarm (a company I normally don't like).

Wow, I just saw someone post a problem with their 20D doing the same exact thing:
20D Shutter Clicks
He even posted the sound the shutter makes. (Does it sound the same?) |

in the US your credit card often extends your warranty by an extra year. i'm not sure if that's the same in canada, but it's worth looking into.
sorry 'bout your luck. :( |

Wow, what a freak accident. Hope your friend's okay. Usually, the next day you're feeling worse after an injury like that.
My homeowner's won't cover my equipment. Once I put my name on a business and started selling images, they said I needed different coverage. Good Luck to you. |

I do hope your friend has fully recovered and is not suffering any ill effects of being run over. With regards to your camera, if you use it professionally, you might encounter a problem getting your home insurance to cover the repairs.
Just so you wont be too shocked, Canon has a fixed price of $250 plus taxes to look at your camera. I had the great pleasure of driving to Montreal not all that long ago because my daughter managed to jam the lens on her G3.
The very best of luck to you, and I do hope the problem is a minor one.

I also have rider for my equipment with statefarm. It costs me about $40 a year, but covers any kind of damage to the camera, even freak accidents.
Hope everything turns out okay.
PS You don't have a shutter cable hooked up, do you? I once put my release in my pocket and it accidently locked into the shoot position. As soon as I turned on the camera it started firing at 5 fps. |

Thanks for all the kind words. Boy, I feel like some member of my family has been injured instead of my camera! LOL! Sure, I can laugh about it today. A little...
My friend's back is feeling much better today. Unfortunately, my camera is not. :(
Canon is closed today, and probably tomorrow as well. Guess I'll have to wait until Wednesday to get it in. I just want to get it in asap.
I'll check with my homeowners policy at that point too. Not sure if I'll claim, unless it's a major amount. There's also a deductible.
As for litigation, there's not so much of that going on in Canada, besides I did not take any info on the people involved. They were stangers at the hill. As for going down backwards, it's part of the risk of going on one of those crazy carpet things. You never know what will happen and you often end up spinning around. It was certainly not deliberate.
Hey maybe this can be an excuse to upgrade to a 5D!!! Oh well, I can always dream, can't I?
