Ugggh. I am not partial to free studies. Well, at least not yet I'm not. I know I cannot pull off what the master artists here who have the master cameras to go with the craft do. I much prefer a theme contest, and then at least I can let my creativity hopefully pull out a top ten. BUT, when its a free for all, I picture more of the most beautiful aurora shots, and more star light nights with long shutter speeds, along with gorgeous reflection shots, and even dreamy looking waterfalls. I can only dream of doing those, and hopefully that dream will come true in the next 3-4 months. But for now? Well, I shoot what I can with what I have in a small town and hope for the best.

I long for a new "theme" challenge soon!

Trust me, after entering tons and tons of themed pictures, a free study is so freeing. Maybe this time around I'll check my camera dates this month.

I'm SOOOOO Exctied about this free study! I'll be traveling for the whole month, getting back to my PC on the 30th... One day to sort, sift, and post for the challenge... Yikes! But I'll have images from 3 continents! Yay! =]

Why have you been blaming your camera so much over the past few weeks? Okay, so some P&S cameras can't shoot long exposure night scenes, waterfalls, and aurora. But there are about a billion other subjects well within their technical capabilities.

I can see it coming. You're going to get the Rebel and after a few more weeks start blaming your lack of good lenses. Or flash. Or tripod. :)

There's no such thing as a 'master camera'. Just the person using it. Unless cameras have grown legs and started thinking for themselves.

Since the free study is so long, create a few themes of your own. Shoot them, and maybe you'll end up with something you'll like and could submit for the Free Study

Far easier to blame your equipment than to admit you're not quite where you'd like to be on a talent/technical/artistic level. This is why you see so many people with no clue running around with $10,000 in gear wondering why they can't sell a photo. ;)

However, there does come a time when we realize we are limited by our equipment in whatever way and finally move up... and then realize that we worked better with the limitations and wonder why we can't get out of 5.2 scores in free studies and... errr.. nevermind :)

Rose, your camera has full manual functions and should be able to do all the things you mentioned. The filters you might want for reflections and waterfalls you can purchase now and use with your current camera, and then also use them if/when you ever upgrade.

Edit: typo

Well, of course!!! Blaming a camera is easy to do!! LOL....

No, actually, I have three dead pixels. So shooting a seen with a dark background or in the dark with basic editing has always been a challenge in an of itself. My camera has been banged around a bit, even before I started using it. Sometimes I get lucky and the dead pixels fall where they are rarely seen. Sometimes I am screwed and they don't.

But, for instance, yesterday I did a photo shoot and so did my sister-in-law. She had the Rebel XT, and knows crap about the camera and rarely uses it (which REALLY pisses me off since she won't let me borrow it..LOL and would rather have it rot in its case), but all she does is snapshots and points and shoots on auto. The difference in the outcome of both shots was clearly shown in both our LCD Monitors. I will also be getting the CD of the photos she took for comparison. No tripod, no settings but auto though - and since it has the ability to shoot well in any situation, I was plaqued by the shoot with my own camera. As she just shot away, I was busy setting apertures and EV's and doing everything I could to catch up with the lighting and the movement.

So, yes, you lose a lot with a camera like mine. On the other hand, I do know there are shots I "can" do, but my creative juices lie within great landscapes, water shots, and the mystic to surreal type photos. I know with the manipulating of the shutter speeds and so forth, what I intend to do will finally take place.

BUT, no way will I be blaming the camera after I get the Rebel. I can guarantee you that. If anything goes wrong when that happens, it will surely BE the photographer, I can assure you.

REALLY? What filters are you referring to? Well, it will only be a matter of three months before I upgrade, but if the filters I can use now will also fit the Rebel, and will do what I want, surely I will get them as I can.

Keep in mind here, as I discuss my camera, it is not new or in good shape (my fujifilm 3800). It has been banged around and has dead space for pixels sometimes and although it functions, it doesn't always do what I want it to and it isn't fast enough to catch the perfect moment on time. It has to adjust and sometimes even shuts itself off during a shoot and I have to restart it. Let's just say I have pretty much ran it into the ground. LOL....SO I don't blame the 3800, as much as I do the shape my particular 3800 is in and what I can and can't do with it.

Also keep in mind that I have no cover for the lense presently, no wide angle lense, and no adapter to place anything as of filters to the end of the lens. It came to us used, and without those things. So when I refer to my camera as a dinosaur, it is because it is old, used, and abused. Hence the reason for the upgrade. Certainly I do my best to get the best shots, and I think for what I have I do pretty darn well, but the camera itself IS not well. LOL....

I will love free study's soon enough, but just not right now am I too thrilled about them. In recent previous posts I have stated why.

Certainly I didn't start this thread to bash my camera, me as a photographer and how I should blame my skills verses my cameras..LOL, or even to bash Free Studies. I was just opening up discussion for the upcoming challenge since one hadn't been started yet, and to see if anyone has the same feelings I do at this time.

Many people use the Cokin series of filters. The P size series would work well for both the type of camera that you have and also the one you want. See here for more details.

Cokin has a magnetic adapter so not being able to physically screw it on to the 3800 should be no problem.

While it's more convenient, you don't even really need the filter holder and adapters. Before I got my adapter and filter holder, I used to hand-hold the square filter in front of the lens and never had any trouble. The only exception to this would be a gradient filter on a long exposure, and in those cases I used tape.

I kinda think it a little over kill to have Best of 2005 + Free Study X at the same time.

*shrug*

And then, we'll go like 4 months without a free entry challenge.

Thanks! I went to the site, but it doesn't give examples of what each filter does? Is it possible you can elaborate?

Well, this is just TERRIFIC! Wish I had known about it before. I just ordered a filter I wanted and it will be here next week. I ordered it from the P series and I will see how it goes. If it works well, I can see that site will be a constant for me. Thank you again for all your help!

I love the free studies. It give you a chance to do whatever you want. A nude, a dog, a macro of a bee's behind, a landscape, et al.

I find the themed challenges as of late to be rather boring. I haven't entered that many cause the confinement of them isn't as much fun for me. Maybe over the year I've been a member, I've just learned to be a bit more selective.

I'll have my new camera for this Free Study, so maybe I'll do better than I did in the last one. Hang on, Rose... you'll love your Rebel and it'll be a fun way for you to get into the groove so to speak.

Good luck all!!
