How about...

You remember watching the Challenge Shuttle explosion.
Hearing that John Lennon was shot
"Full House" and when Mary Kate and Ashley were seriously cute.

John Lennon was shot like in my 7th grade year. My typing teacher (he was a very hippy/environemntalist type of guy from Portland) came to class raving...."Oh my God....John Lennon's been shot!!!! He's dead!!!" Mind you....all of us were going...."who's John Lennon?" he was absolutely beside himself that we didn't know who JL was.

I grew up in Southern California, I was a surfer and a skater. When I was in High School, I bet I could count on my fingers the number of days I wore long pants. I worked in a surf shop, so no need for long pants there. Usually when my parents made me go to church on Sunday, if I hadn't gotten up at 4am to get to the beach for a little dawn patrol surf session.

I even used to get up super early, go surf for a few hours as the sun came up, then just get in my car and go to school, and the salt would dry in my hair and my teachers would ask me things like "What's that in your hair?"

As for music, one act sums it up for me, Billy Idol.

I'm in Australia but we get a lot of TV from the USA. The big ones for me in that period were The Facts Of Life and Family Ties. Also that one with Tony Danza and Growing Pains.

As for music, Dire Straights with Money For Nothing, INXS with just about everything they did and Wham with Wake Me Up.

The motto I remember on all the T-shirts was "Choose Life" :)

funny thing is that a lot of the relics from the 80s and early 90s are now popular again. That and late 70's stuff. Vans, Converse, Breakdancing, all the 80s movies, you name it.

Certain elements of style are always repeating.

so... how 'bout photography :p

I still remember sitting on a train on the way to high school and a group of girls sitting there singing the theme song from Flashdance. :D

I remember wearing pants called "Bogarts" with my converse high tops. My cousin played MJ's Thriller every single night. Islands in the Stream was really popular with the older crowd. Molly Ringwald was still popular. :)

Wasn't "Fame" popular then too?

How about Degrassi Junior High? But that was Canadian. Rin Tin Tin K9 Cop but I think that was Canadian too. Did they ever play Dogtanian in the US? I know they did in England. Those may be obscure references but they definitely scream "80s!" to me. You also know you grew upin the 80s if you can pretty much recite every line of Dirty Dancing..... *cough* *cough*...I carried a watermelon.....*cough*

Funny stuff. Digitalpins, YOU STOLE MY THUNDER ;) I was going to name the British Knights BK. Socks and shoes - matching BK.

But I wasn't cool enough for that. I always owned the lamest shoes and everyone made fun of me for that. I wore some polo shirts too and that didn't help either ;) No rocks thrown though, I was pretty tall and stocky for my age.

Yay.

One kid took pity on me and showed me a place to buy name brand shoes and gave me a HUGE chicago bulls t-shirt as well as a couple of surf shirts and... a hypercolor t-shirt that didn't change color anymore. I still remember his name. Patrick Gnamm. The only bilingual kid in school at the time (french-english that is, plenty of quadrilingual Indian kids running around that we just didn't know enough about). Good kid. He was one of these famous kids - won a lottery ticket one day for a thousand bucks and got the day off school. He got the lottery ticket by pretending it was for his mom. Lost his virginity at the ripe age of 12 too. Lost track of him after that for some reason that I didn't quite grasp at the time.

I thought Garbage pail kids were the coolest too, I had like three. My sister stole them from me if she ever saw me with them and my mother would throw them out too.

We also did hockey card throwing contests to see who could throw the farthest and take everyone elses cards.

Rapping contests of "Principal's Office" and "Let your backbone slide" (which I had personally never even heard on the radio until years later)

oooh ooh and SQUAREBALL! The greatest schoolyard game ever. Played that on a beach (the backwards American way with hands) just a couple of months ago.

Good times.

lol never heard of that one mine was SUICIDE! The greatest schoolyard game ever. the way it was played was on the handball courts or a empty wall you throw and bounce the ball of the wall....... if someone drops it while trying to catch it anyone playing can through and beam/hit him or her with the ball, they have to run and touch the wall before getting beamed/hit by the ball.

OMG! I had a pair of these with the same print, except dark brown. I also used to wear them with a brown long-sleeved shirt with a short collar that, if you've ever seen a typical shirt at a Chinese restaurant worn by your server, stood up half-way up your neck. Then I used to wear it with this multi-colored round beaded hat. Yeah, I was really fashionable back then...but you know, I'm sure I blended right in being the only Asian in the whole state of Idaho. Ha ha.

Hmmm, thank goodness there are no pics circulating out there!!!
