In the member's challenge this week... could we clarify this?
Basically anything goes? And this is added to the "no spot editing" or supercedes that rule?
So,... anything goes to the whole image, or spot editing allowed?

Check the challenge now... we reworded the extra rules (thanks, Terry). Also note the change to the 'rules at a glance', which now read "These may be overriden if specified in the 'extra rules' section of the challenge."

still not clear - does the lifting of the whole POST-SHOT ADJUSTMENT section mean that ANY adjustment is now legal?? like cloning and layering and stuff like that?

I understand that yes in that specific challenge

Any adjustment usually forbidden by the 'post-shot adjustments' section of the challenge rules does not apply for this challenge. That make sense?

It means that you can't be DQ'ed for breaking any of the rules under "Post-shot adjustments" in the Challenge Rules this week. DQ requests based on any of the rules in that section will not be considered. All other rules (such as obscenity rules, etc) still apply.

Note that this applies only to the Doors and Windows challenge. All normal rules apply to the Square challenge.

I would guess the shot does not need to have been taken this week?

Incorrect. Exposure date is not listed under 'Post Shot Adjustments.' Your photograph must still be taken this week. Please review the challenge rules page to see what modifications are normally forbidden under the 'Post Shot Adjustments' section. Only those are not valid this week.

Doors and windows will be full of reflective surfaces -- having dodge/burn tools available may allow more creative composition despite lighting difficulties.

Thanks for the clarification Drew. :)

Hmm... I may just have to join now. ;) I've been playing just recently with the dodge and burn and clone tools, and was wishing we could use them in the challenges.

Both challenges could actually be met with the same image, if you found a square window or square door. This actually brings up an issue, and maybe it's already in the rules somewhere, and I missed it. But in the rare case where a photo could meet BOTH challenges, such as this week, could the same photo be submitted to both challenges?

Under the 'Disqualification' section...

"A photograph may only be used in one challenge, even if it is cropped or altered differently to fit another challenge. "

But from the same set-up or position couldn't you shoot two frames and use one in each challenge -- you'd just have to be VERY careful about filenames. Not that I'd actually recommend this as a strategy...

Not that I was planning on doing that... I was just curious. If I get a good windows/door image though, I'll probably join so I can enter it.

A thought. Can we get a clarification on the 'no processing restrictions. In particular can we clear up if we can use more than one photograph/ clip art, etc ?

I feel that this rule does't mean we can cut and paste from multiple photos or use other stock images, but I'd like to have it unabmiguously cleared up (and put in the challenge description) before we really get started.

Actually, I'd say that those things are allowed in this challenge. This is what people have always asked for... no editing rules. So, they got it... for one challenge. The reason we don't allow red-eye reduction and hot pixel removal in the first place is because there's no policing 'spot edits'. Same thing for post-processing... either open the gates or don't. As much as I'll hate to see a picture with clipart pasted right in the middle of it, I think that photo will at least get its reward in its score...

admin suggestion: could we get some kind of flag on the home page next to the challenge to indicate that special rules are in play? sometimes we just read the topic an shoot without ever going to the 'submit' page until we have a shot

if there was a flag on the 1st page, we'd all be alerted to be on the look-out!

*I* wouldn't go that far... I would say that you could use anything that you took during the challenge week.

I personally don't like the idea of composite images. :(
