Well, I don't think it is one of yours John. It looks like crap, totally uninteresting, awkwardly framed, unfocused. Kinda looks like some of my stuff. Why in the world did you post it? I wouldn't hang it on Sadam's wall.

Uninteresting, maybe... I don't think it's awkwardly framed at all.

I am trying to form a new view on photography. DPC has changed the way I look at photos and I don't like my new view as well. I'm trying to get back to the way I used to look at photography :)

I love the simplicity of it. I also like the sharp contrast and the grain. In my mind, the fork being cut off has no effect on this photo at all. It's irrelevant to the image. It's a detail that makes no difference at all.

Whether or not the image is unappealing to the viewer is simply subjective.

I don't think I will reveal the source of this photo. I gave the last one away by linking it from it's host site so I didn't do that on this one. I moved it to my own site before I linked it.

I will post another one later :)

I see four basic elements to this photo, one of which is subjective.
1) it is black and white
2) there is a dirty plate
3) there is a chopped off fork with bent tines
4) there is a mostly eaten bit of whatsit
Items 2,3,and 4 each comprise about an equal portion of the photo. How is one to know which item or items to ignore, with each being equally grainy and of equal dof?
I will agree whether or not it is appealing is subjective but I also must agree with P.T. Barnum.
Looking forward to your next critique photo.

Hmm - the composition is actually rather good in my view. The grain and focus is neither here nor there.

What this photo falls down on for me - BIGTIME - is interest. It's neither attractive nor insightful. At least not on it's own. Perhaps as part of a collection it would have some context that could help me to some insight.

But as it stands it's a technically competent, well composed photo of an unattractive chunk of food.

I can easily see how this could happen. Someone I know just moments ago described DPC to me as "sucking black pit of photographic critique". OK, maybe that's a bit harsh, but the thing is that this site sets up a kind of tension between your own sense of style and aesthetics and that of the majority of voters. I like that because whenever the hive mind* goes against me (either over my photos or, more usually, other people's) I have to decide for myself whether or not I agree with them, and if I find I disagree then I understand a little bit more about myself. Other people could risk losing their self-knowledge, though, by deciding that the hoard is always right.

But then again, losing it only to regain it later on can make you appreciate your own sense of style even more :).

*Note: this is a joke.
