HELP!!!
I'm shooting a bunch of Cellists in a music college later today. About 12 or so. They play as a group. Anyone got any ideas? Obviously get the instuments in.
I'm also thinking some close ups of their hands etc, and wondering about a b&w of all of them waiting in a line at the bus stop with their cases.
All advice gratefully received. Even if it's just pose suggestions for groups. As I said I have some time with them later today, and also on friday. There's nowhere outside that great, and I'll have to play with the WB some to lose the (indoor) fluoro colour cast, but that's ok.
If anyone has some pics I could copy too that would be pukka :P
Thanks.....

Sounds like fun. So many things you can do with them. How many of them are there? I'm envisioning several outside situations where the cello cases seem strangely out of place, like along a park bench or on a bus.
Can't wait to see the shots, you must share with us.

One nice artsy shot I've alwasy liked is make one of them resin up their bow and play and try and catch the powder, the string, and the bow as a macro
Alway's play around from different perspectives :) If you're feeling acrobatic, get down on the floor and shoot up at them.
Here's a nice pose with some musicians standing
And if you're feeling adventurous, and the weather is warm, here is another possibility ;) |

Not in Scotland just now unfortunately...
...and that's a Double Bass :P
Thanks for the suggestions. Apart from the 'fun' shots they also want a kind of 'yearbook' shot too. Does having them stand on some steps, so I get a kind of 'tiered' effect sound too boring? |

Didn't you shoot them yesterday, Mark?

Kinda. Just some record shots. I also have some time with them tomorrow just before their (I just found this bit out) INAUGURAL gig. Oops. Thought they were more established than that. Anyway - not sure I made this too clear in my original post.
Their gig will be in a light wood panelled room, and they will be wearing mainly black with hints of red. There are sme stairs but they are a bit pish, to be honest. Just wondered whether any other folk had come up with any ideas... |

I'm sure you've thought of this already, but what about a shot of the player in focus, but with the hands/feet in motion blur? |

not sure how serious they wanna be, but how about a shot of them sitting in their open cases like they're rowing them across the stage?

They don't actually really know what they want as far as I can tell. So all suggestions gratefully received, thanks.
One of those gigs where I'm gonna have to be entirely on the ball and full of ideas, as well as going with the flow I think.
Ho hum....
(Please continue to post if anything else comes to mind - my mind is flagging today and I am struggling with concepts)

Make sure you have enough memory. Shoot in RAW in case you have white balance issues.

Hi - just a couple thoughts here... Lighting is the most important thing is any photograph. If you don't have pro-studio/portable units, perhaps since its music and you can have off hours access to a stage with stage lighting, that can be very useful. I personally think that lack of background if not blended too full dark while getting them in a spot lighted fashion can be very effective. Most stage lighting have Ap spots that can aim and zoom, and usually more than one or two!
One last thing, try perhaps too have all in a shallow DOF, IE have them all at the same aprx distance to the lens using a very open lens - or maybe even then keep one or two in tack sharp with the others going soft with depth and darkness...
Just some thoughts! |

Thanks for all responses and ideas so far.
I will shoot raw, but I will have to hope that 1 GB will be enough as it's all I have. About 100 shots or so, so I guess so.
Jefalk - thanks for the tips. I am actually on a backstage theatre degree so I had thought of this - but alas having just checked the whole place is lit with halogen floods and 1kw parcans. So definitely some WB issues but hey. I'm going to try and rope in a couple of tutors on my course (actually kevrobertson and tallbloke on this site) to help and maybe drag in a tripod with lights or something.
The main issue is that they have requested that the shoot be done between their rehearsal and their gig, so I guess I have about 30 to 45 minutes all in. It's gonna be a tough call.
Please keep them coming in, all your ideas are helpful!
