Would I sound like an asshole if I thought all of these would be better off in a weekly thread or something? It seems like I see 2 more everyday... 'xxx won yyy at zzz.com'.

We keep asking you to put in a 'congrats' forum then let us block it :)
You probably see new ones every day, because of the talented bunch of people who frequent your web site and keep winning competitions that announce winners each day :)

Gord...how many times have you congratulated a DPC weekly winner in a forum thread??? none, so why should DPC be spammed by other 'congrat' threads from sites that have nothing to do with DPC??
No one is arguing that there are no talented photographers here... OBVIOUSLY there are because there are WINNERS every week...so no need for the conceited comment, thanks.
My 2 cents.

Your first point is wrong, and I don't get your second one - I wasn't being conceited, I was just pointing out that you get daily threads because other places announce new winners on a daily basis and the only people being congratulated are DPC regulars, so I don't get your 'nothing to do with DPC' comment either.
My whole post was asking that they get put somewhere where they can then be ignored - no need to get so hostile so quickly.

Gordon, I understood you and agree with you and Drew. Put them somewhere were I can isolate them.

They should probably go back to the rant forum since that's where they started. Then everyone has the opportunity to block them out by not viewing the rants...

Either that or upgrade the forums so that the site council members can move threads to the correct places and dump them in the 'Rant' forum if they start somewhere else. Drew - it's in your power to fix the things you don't like on your own site ;) |

except there are also a bunch of members out there that don't want to listen to the ranting and do want to hear about winners ... i think one ongoing thread for congrats would be fine. then it's just one thread for people to ignore in their forum activity list ...

If you did them in a weekly thread, you would never see any of them as most of the links work for that day only. I don't win any but I sure enjoy looking at what won for others. I think there should be a forum category for Congrats! I'm proud of the DPCers that win on other sites and like to know that I can at least somewhat compete with that talented bunch.

This I know... but I'm not trying to be a jerk, and I'm very proud of the photographers here. The more awards they rack up, the better. I hope you can all quit your day jobs soon :)

No, because anytime a new post was added to the thread, it would bump the thread.
An entire forum section for congrats seems too much for me. We're already pushing a fairly ridiculous number of forum sections. It's also like asking for more congratulations threads, which wasn't really the point of my probing the issue ;)

Perhaps if the recent thread list was back to a more 'sorted' approach like it was before, with the broad catagories of forums broken out that might help - put all the rants/ congrats/ jokes/ etc threads into the block at the bottom so people can see or ignore them if they like, and the other topics would always take priority in their own particular thread ? |

For what it's worth, I would prefer to be left out of any 'congrats' threads here on dpc for things that go on at other websites. I never start them and I RARELY post to one of them.
I do appreciate the recognition, but it's not necessary. Tell me how much you like or dislike what I post to DPC instead :)

Well, that blows my suggestion for a 'Rave' forum then. ;-) |

Mostly what seems missing to me is the ability to easily merge threads. For example, there are two recent threads started hours apart discussing small photo sizes. It's a pain to juggle comments back and forth, remembering what was said in each thread (although it does present the interesting opportunity to argue opposite sides in the two forums...).
It would be great of you could concatenate those into a single thread.
It would also help with threads being started over and over again because the old ones are buried in the archives (and not currently searchable).
I think single-topic threads like congrats, outtakes, etc. (not whole sections) would help; maybe the ability to launch a totally new thread should be somewhat more limited than it is now (what First Amendment?). |

I dunno, I think it's great to recognize our members' other achivements. Maybe you can have a spot dedicated to these "congrats" things, but I think we should recognize our members' other achievements. Are we scared that they advertise other great sites out there?
Anyhow, I'll post 'em when I see 'em.

No, but the thought had certainly crossed my mind. I'm pretty happy to say that I think we do what we do best. 'Advertising' for them every day, though, is a different story :) I hope you guys are promoting DPChallenge on these other sites as much as you're promoting those sites here ;)

They consider that 'spamming' where i have done it in the past and they also consider it some major infringement on their solidarity... lol ...

Other sites, Drew? What other sites?
As far as I am concerned, there is only âONEâ site - the DPC site. I view at other locations, oh sure, but this is my favorite street corner for simply hanging out and having fun. Guess what Drew, I am learning here too â bonus!
It is the openness of this virtual community that makes this site successful, so don't change that, or else, I fear that you will need to confront harming your handiwork. The wherewithal to rant, comment, argue, discuss, express opinions, praise, critique, and of course laugh, all amalgamate to bring about this place as a magnificent site.
When a thread that I started on a fundamental photography subject was recently hijacked by unrelated rhetoric, and was ultimately censored and then suppressed by the DPC gods, I was not overly happy. But, I deduced that was the penalty to pay for this astonishing openness. So, just keep humanizing the site with the many great concepts and suggestions that are obviously flowing into DPC. Please do not consider anything to handcuff this freshness. |

Now how can I argue with that? :)
