Does anyone think a book could come out of this? |

I would love to do one using four photographers, doing specific shots and writing for them. Just a distant dream. I have been told I am not ready for a book. |

Don't let that discourage you. A lot of people don't know what they are talking about...
Poetry is also very personal, what some will dismiss as garbage others will embrace. I see no reason why you shouldn't try and pursue your goal |

Definately don't sell yourself short. I have read all the poems in here, and everyone that has contributed has been amazing. I have really enjoyed reading them and I personally hope the thread continues. As enticement and to bump the thread yet again, I will throw another pic out here for anyone who cares to give it a shot. In fact, how about two?
Zebra shot was taken at the Wildlife World Zoo outside Phoenix.

Shorewrack
There is a harsh, a strict, cartography
to love we cannot master without grief.
We start our journeys hopeful that the sea
is clearly marked, as buoys mark a reef
that sailors outward bound and full of dreams
might make fair passage ΓΆ€” so, to us, it seems
(in love's first flush, when we set sail and leave
our shore behind) that we will always ride
the surge of our desire. We never think
that love's vast sea gives us no place to hide,
nor roof nor shelter to wait out the storm,
nor hearth nor kindling that might keep us warm,
that we two sail alone, and must depend
each on the other; that we must be strong
enough to keep despair and fear at bay
against the coming of the uncertain day,
nor least of all that we might founder too,
shorewrack on the mud, like this abandoned shoe.

Robert, this is awesome. You certainly nailed it! Very fitting. Did you know I spent 9 yrs in the Navy? It is very good, I thank you :-) I think the photo though pales in comparison to your poem!
I am still astounded by this thread. It is truly wonderful IMO. It's not often you see 12+ pages of positivity. No ranting, debate or controversy or anything. Great stuff, and an incredible display of talent. Thanks to all of the awesome poets contributing :-) |

Yup! That's aprt of why i went that way with it. I'm an old seadog myself, though never Navy; I spent most of my life messing about with boats, though I can no longer afford to do so :-( I was even a sailmaker for a time...
Glad you liked it!

Ah, Bear, I should left you the 'Quiet Moorage' picture.
I just wanted to break the "Speaker for the Animals" mold. :)

Home Again
Eight days out of Monterey
Held fast to the windward shore
The final passage charted
Home from the worldwide tour
The adventures now behind me
The perils all traversed
Asway at this quiet moorage
In golden memories immersed.
I can't tarry long here, though
There are challenges yet to meet.
As long as I am seaworthy
My log stays incomplete.
I hear the sea lanes calling me
To places I've never been
Distant lands and sun drenched isles
Then back home again.

This poem is simply amazing. It reminds me a lot of Alfred Tennyson's Ulysses.

a journey freely, but when it is done
We look behind and see that guidance came
from unexpected sources, and we know
we did not travel lightly, like the wind,
but rather made our way from start to end
more like a tide-bound log, in ebb and flow
between two shores we cannot even name.

I am a part of all that I have met,
yet all experience is an arch, wherethro'

forever and forever when I move.

To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
of all the western stars, until I die.
Love that poem! It's my emotional anthem as I near 60 :-)

Thanks a lot Robert, I really like it.

This is my favorite part, very powerful. The image of a "tide-bound log" is great...and I can't believe how fast you wrote this. Thanks again. I posted it up in with the picture and accredited it to you as Robt Ward. If you prefer a different name/spelling, please let me know.

Well. that first couple lines popped into my head when I saw this, so I just went on cruise control. Why I decided on such a bizarre rhyme scheme I have NO idea: abccba, sheesh. Glad you like it. And "Robt. Ward" is correct :-)

This is an image of my mother and myself 5 days before she died of cancer. My father died in March of this year, she passed away sept 1st. It's going to be an empty holiday fro me this year. Will you help me? I am poor at expressing myself with words.

I've said it once, I am saying it here again...many thanks for such a beautiful poem for this picture. This is one of my all-time favorite pictures. I am so proud to have inspired a genius in you. You should come up with a book of DPChallenge pictures. If you won't set a limit to the number of pictures, I will barrage you with them.:)

"The Homeless Plight"
Eyes never meet
in a passing glance.
Compassion rarely
has a chance.
An emotional game
of hide-n-seek.
Hidden love from
the poor and weak.
A beggars life
is never rich,
a richer life
she longs to live.
A painful loss,
a crushing blow,
what caused her stress,
we'll never know.
Unless we have
compassion's sight,
we cannot see
the homeless plight. |
This is another one that blows me away. I work with homeless families so this strikes deep inside me.. both the photo and the poem.
Thanks to both of you :)

my beautiful morning,
my tranquil dawn.
