"Strong and Free"
Along a ridge they run and race,
as wild mustangs do.
Yet, if their life you trace
you would see the truth.
The existence of a dying breed
was in danger of being extinct.
There was ignorance and greed,
the future of the west was indistinct.
But the horse had a friend,
"Wild Horse Annie" was her name.
A true advocate to help defend
the wild and untame.
So when you see a herd at play,
think how tragic it would be
without the spirit of the mustang
running strong and free.

WOW! I love it, it's perfect. thanks for the lovely poem to go with the horses, and a historically correct one too! Smart man whith talent AND does his homework!

I've had to slow down on this lately due to a heavy workload, but hope to add more to it this evening. (Though a new music-related toy arrived in the mail today, and I'll want to play with that some!) One of these days I may even catch up to you guys. ;-)

He was very expressive, like this photo - he was a thinker and a planner. :) Lower energy than a circus bear, more intelligent than a regular ole bear.

Hook up the rest of my music toys to it, of course. ;-) My goal is to start recording my own CD's as a "one-man rock band", and the multitrack recorder is a key component. Photography is actually a secondary interest; music is the primary.

I'll be submitting an 11x14 of this to the zoo later this month. The bear sadly died about a month after I took this. His name isn't Godot - that's just my title for it. :) I will put whatever poem gets written for him with the image for the zoo.

Ok, Mavrik here goes:
Ursus arctos middendorffi *
Bear, Bär, Oso, Orso **
Or so I am called in parts of the world,
but just knowing my name doesn't give you a hold.
Spend time with me and some secrets I'll share,
on what life is like, while you're being a bear.
First look at my coat, all this brown stuff I wear.
Its fur, you should know, which is not really hair.
The hair on your head keeps growing, you see.
So if this all was hair, you soon wouldn't see me.
My coat keeps me warm during winters back home,
way up in the North, past some city called Nome.
Now look at my paw and the claws I have there,
they come in quite handy when you eat like a bear.
Omnivore is the word that the scientists use,
it means that I'll eat just whatever I choose.
Berries, roots, insects and fish from a stream,
I kill when I'm hungry, not because I am mean.
There's lots more to learn, so come back here each day
to watch all my cousins as they splash and they play.
The world around you is a wonderful place,
so study the creatures with whom you share space.
We all have to live here so isn't it fair,
these words of wisdom have come from a bear.
