Like many of us I've been doing a Photo-a-Day project (AKA PaD) for every day of this year. Since the end is now in sight, I've been starting to wonder what to do with this set of 360+ images, as I'd like a hardcopy of them in some way.
My options that I've had a brief look at so far are:
- Get each image individually printed out, then put them all in an album - could be a heck of a lot of work...
- Have a photobook of some sort printed - looks better, but fixed templates mean limited aspect ratios.
- Tile the images into a poster print (such as the one John made) - I've got too many posters & prints waiting to go on the walls as it is!
My problems are that the images are mostly non-standard aspect ratios, due to my carefree cropping & resizing with only the web in mind, and that each image is only 800px on the longest dimension, which might possibly lead to quality problems if printed too large. Only now do I realise that I should have created high-res versions as well as web-sized...
So, does anyone have any suggestions and/or experiences? :o)

Oh, and if anyone knows of any good places that does custom photo books or suchlike, please let me know (UK preferred, US possible if cheapish).

Sombody here did the best idea yet - a calendar!
You can use PS to make a contact sheet and then rearrange them to match the days of the month/week and print out a 2006 calendar with your 2005 pics.

I think I may do a photo a day for 2006...but I'm going to crop each and every one the same... 1:1 -- that way they'll all look good together...maybe do that for 2006?

You are still OK with the cropping...
My Poster
Crop down to a square for each image. I think 19 of these are 2:1 or 1:2 instead of square to fill out the blocks.

Thing is, some of the images don't work as 1:1 or 2:1 crops, and I'd like to preserve them as I originally created them, if at all possible.

Interesting idea, I'd not thought of that. Would it be best to do a tiled composite of each month's images per month page, or somehow tied into the daily table?

Buzznet creates books and posters of all the images you choose to include for the users registered there. I will be buying one or the other (or maybe both) when my PaD projects completes. :)

Where do they offer that? I can't see any mention of prints or books anywhere on their site...

The only difference between a professional and an amateur photographer (in the common sense of the word) is that the amatuer keeps all of their images.
"...Poor castaway of commerce, and so live
That none shall ever see you come to market–
Not for a long, long time. Plant, breed, produce,
But what you raise or grow, why, feed it out,
Eat it or plow it under where it stands,
To build the soil. For what is more accursed
Than an impoverished soil, pale and metallic?..." - Robert Frost - Build Soil

You may have to register to Buzznet and add some photos before you see the option. It shows up on the right under announcements and also your main navigation box (print photos). Posters are $9.99 and books start at $12.99 and go up from there.

What about something like creating a montage of each month's pics, then using the final 12 results for a calendar for next year. Odd sizes wouldn't really matter with something like.
edited to add ;) NZ evening 'crowd' here :))

I guess it's a damn good thing I'm an amateur then...and an equally good thing that I like all the images I used in this year-long excursion into the PaD world. I can't wait to see them all together as a finished product.
Not everyone on this site is, or even aspires to be, a professional.

Ah yes, I'd had a look at them before, but I think they worked out at about $90-100 for either of the two book style, since I'd have so many photos per page to do. I'll keep them in mind tho, thanks.

I've just come across the self-publishing service provided by lulu.com - has anyone here had any experiences using them? They look like a reasonably cheap option...

I'm in the same boat ... but my decision was a bit easier:
I've decided that I mostly did not enjoy the project and more than 1/2 of the photos really suck. I'll be dumping the pics on my iPod for musical slideshows at social gatherings, and that's about it.
... and I won't be doing a "daily" project ever again :)
(I am strongly considering a monthly project, however, in order to create a 2007 calendar) |

I've used mypublisher.com for the last few years with great sucess. Their software could be mush better, but there is a simple work-around. In their template choices you can choose full page with one image. So instead of choicing your photos with their software for placement, create you own pages and summit them as one image.
I just did the grandparents Christmas books, and although I used about 115 photos it only appears as 20 plus the cover to their software. Also you have the added benefit of using drop shadows, font styles, etc that isn't avalible otherwise. |
