When I was preparing my landscape photo for the challenge I hated having to reduce the image down to be displayed on the site because there are a lot of nice details that I knew would be lost. I understand the need for this but wouldn't it be nice to see the winning photos at their maximum size if the photographers wish to submit them upon winning? Would this be too hard on the site? I just love being able to look at photos in all their detail. With the cropping and the different cameras used the sizes would be wide ranging but that shouldn't hurt anything. If there are concerns about people copying the full sized image than can't that be prohibited somehow? Plus we can always put our copyright symbols on the photos. Any thoughts?

Is this you hinting on another win Tim? :)
I do think this is a good idea though, Specially with landscapes, a lot of detail is missed from the 640x640 size limit.

Perhaps a middle ground would be to submit a larger version of the winning picture - maybe not the 'full size' original, but a 1024x768 type size rather than the current 600 pixel or so versions. That way it wouldn't be worth 'stealing' for printing but still large enough to pick up the subtlties.

How about the winners (if they want) make a comment after the voting and put a link to pbase or where ever the high res is stored. At least that way it won't become a DPC bandwidth issue.
Those who want to share can... JMO

Many people subscribe to other photo sites (pbase, for example). They could post a larger version there. I for one, would also like to see larger versions of a number of entries (the winner is not always my favorite).
We could ask people to post their photos on another site at a larger size. This could be done after the voting so no one complains about "everybody knew who took that one". A link could easily be posted in the comments section.

Konador, I wouldn't do that : -) Would I?
Why have the photos elsewhere? This is the challenge site. The hi res photos don't need to stay here forever, they could be rotated out every week with the new winners. That way there would only be a maximum of nine hi res photos when you count the speed challenges.

I suggested this before and there wasnt a lot of buzz "in favor" of it then, either.
I think Dave is right on tho when he says that there's nothing stopping us from sharing any res we want from our own gallery sites.

Or maybe if DPC were going to offer personal galleries and prints really soon... |

Hmmm, I don't think the pixel size matters as far as the detail you see IF you don't try viewing it over 100% of its size. Right? And 640 pixels at 100% is big enough in most cases.
Maybe a better idea is to allow the submitter to add in a link to their PBase high-res picture. |

Don't you ever move in close to a large print to study the details as apossed to just standing back and looking at it? Well, the 640 size is like standing back and viewing an image. You can enjoy the whole image that way but you aren't able to enjoy all of the fine detail that may be present in the original. I do that all of the time with my ACDSee viewer. I view the image at 100% so that the image is way larger than my screen and then I scroll around and check out the whole image. It's the next closest thing to viewing a large print of it. PBase is like that, where you have viewing options from small to original size. PBase is fine but couldn't we also have it that way on this site for the winners? I'm just thinking that this is a photography site, so why not show some winning photos in all their glory?
