As far as I know, 97.7 isn't a radio station around here and I don't consider a few people calling in to a show to be any form of scientific documentation. I'd be interested in real documentation, if you know of any. |
all the documentation your asking for is opinion set out by the masses. I'm suprised you didn't learn this in school. You can read more here Life Network and I will post the rest if you still need them.
Edit to add: Isn't this getting off topic MK??? If so then why not start another thread to discuss this particular part???

I'm simply asking you to back up a statement you declared to be fact in this thread. As of yet, you've been unable to do so. No, I did not learn in school that "Everybody wants the "Mrs. Clever" wife. One that doesn't take[sic] back, does what she's told (yes I said told) cooks, cleans, irons, has dinner ready on time etc." Perhaps our schools had different curriculums. |

Perhaps I'll reword that for you so maybe you'll have a better understanding. "Mrs. Clever" is supposed to be the perfect house wife. Today most average men want that as its what society says they should have. As example do you know why shows like Rosanne never continued on TV??? Cuz nobody wants to see some fat mouthy trailer trash house wife on TV. That is why in most shows the main characters are thin, fit etc. Society has depicted these types of people as "hot" or cosmetically pleasing which can go as far back as some of the first TV shows. When you see stuff on TV or in a mall or on a billboard its to make ads pleasing. Could you imagine an ad for a tropical island which a big girl in a bikini??? It would be funny but it all circles back to what society wants as a whole. I left the link to the life network as they have a lot of info on the "Mrs. Clever" (and I'm only using her as an example) or relationships in regarding these issues.

So last night I updated my profile on match.com.
I hate dating. I hate having to deal with dating. But then again, I hate not dating even more. ;)
I agree that it's hard. Particularly when you are past the college age dating pool. At 30 I find I have no life at all outside of work. I work, come home, and realize that I have no social circle to speak of offline. It's very depressing. :)
I'm job hunting and dating at the same time. The parallels are strikingly similar.

First of all, no woman I know of has ever married "society" or an "average man." Most are below average *cough* and some are above average. The average man would have 2.5 kids, so that's sort of hard to do. Wouldn't he also have 1.3 homes, a fenced in yard and a brand new SUV every two years?
Let's be realistic - women and men are both looking for someone they can get along with. Ideas of "cook clean and not talk back" belong long ago and have no place in a world where two people are trying to make a relationship. What you're talking about is a dictatorship and frankly those never work in marriage or in politics. If you have a wife, why don't you go read her all the posts you've made in this thread - then go take your picture for the Cheater Cheater challenge cuz uh... yeah, no women I know would smile and nod at your 1910 notion of a relationship.
As far as the average guy, who is he? Is he a former high school football player who's gained 80 pounds since high school, sits around drinking beer and being a fat lazy pig? Or is he a businessman, successful in the world and looking to always go somewhere further with his life? Cuz I bet if you take 100 of the beer belly former jock losers who are out of work 3 months a year, 99 would say "hell yes I want a wife who knows her role." If you take 100 of the successful businessmen who are making something of themselves, earning a great salary and are together sort of men - I bet 99 of them would laugh at what you're saying.
So the average man? I don't know what he wants - but I know what kind of man wants a woman who "doesn't talk back." One who doesn't have power enough to control his own life and wants power over someone else.

Convincing proof indeed. Particularly as it ran for 9 years. Obviously nobody watched it. |

At least get her name right -- The Beaver's mom was Mrs. Cleaver. (Think about it -- those writers had to be clever in those days.)
BTW: What's a "date"?

Hmm... "Leave it to Beaver" ran for 6 seaons, "Roseanne" for 9. Using your own logic, doesn't that mean we prefer "fat, mouthy, trailer trash" over the perfect housewife?
To those of you dating - i met my husband indirectly through online communication, via the college bulletin board system. Knew i was going to marry him before i knew his name. :) So keep looking, you'll find it! |

Rosanne was never a "high in the ratings program" and was cancelled. Yes the average man wants an average women not the rosanne type figure. If they did you you honestly think you would be using pleasing models to advertise with instead of sea pigs like rosanne??? This is society no matter what my opinion or anybodys elses is. Yes its discriminative but at the same time its accepted by society as a whole.
Why do women by all those creams and anti-wrinkle (or whatever it is)??? To look younger??? more beautiful??? to feel better about themselves??? whatever the reason its not an overweight person advertising that stuff on TV. You may not agree with it but you (as a whole) do it without even knowing it. You(s) will buy the cream that takes away crows feet in hopes that it makes you look better and if it works then great, if it makes you feel better then thats even better but it takes a big man/women to look past someones short fallings (ie. income, kids, size, look etc. - used only for examples) and only a few in society can do this.

Roseanne only started dropping in the ratings near the end of the show, after the premise had worn itself out and was getting tired. 9 seasons is a hell of a run for a sitcom.. especially one you claim nobody wanted any part of.
Still, I have to agree with you that the current trend of sitcoms backs up your claim to some degree.. Shows like "Yes, Dear", "Everybody Loves Raymond" and the like do feature rather "homebody" type mother/wife figures, and over-the-top misogynist male types. But unlike the 50's sitcom world, where the female was much more the "do everything for the man without question" type.. the females in the modern shows are a lot stronger, more apt to smack that husband upside the head, and in the end are usually shown to be right, to have the real power, and to be smarter than the goofball husbands. They are also not a reflection of society per se, as they are a stereotypical view of a small demographic.
In personal *experience*.. among friends, neighbors, and my community, I see absolutely no evidence of men demanding the "June Cleaver" type of woman, whatsoever, and that, I think, is a stronger pointer to the reality. |

I am saddened (but not shocked) to see people actually take TV as barometer for society's likes and dislikes. The whole TV wasteland can be a thread of its own, no need to start one here.
If I were to say what *I'm* looking for (in the order they come to mind):
intelligence
wit
sense of humor
explorer
wide range of interests
personable
babe (which probably doesn't meet anyone else's definition of babe since it's my all-encompassing term for intangibles)
Yes, physical attraction does come into play but no amount of pulchritude can overcome an undesirable personality. I would rather have a friend than an "uber-hottie" no-common-interests airhead who I would be embarrassed to listen speak in public.
Now if the twain were to meet, but therein lies the interesting aspect since my version of "uber-hottie" is probably different than others.
The brain is by far the sexiest part of a woman.
The big question is: Did gayle get >>250 views since this thread started?!? I believe she received nearly 1000 +/-. |

When I was 20 and single, I wanted to find a hot guy with a cool car and lots of expendible income. I had a list of about 20 or so things that Prince Charming had to meet in order to be my man. Now, being single again and 16 years more mature, that list is a bit shorter and much less superficial. Employed, intelligent, clean, keen sense of humor, good personal hygiene and grooming habits, and must NOT live with his mother. If he just happens to look like Antonio Banderas, it's just cake. ;)

Do you actually do any research or do you just make stuff up hoping people will believe you?
Roseanne Nielsen Ratings:
#2 in the 1988-1989 season
#2 in the 1989-1990 season
#3 in the 1990-1991 season
#2 in the 1991-1992 season
#2 in the 1992-1993 season
#4 in the 1993-1994 season
If Roseanne wasn't highly rated, WHAT WAS? Roseanne was #2 for 4 out of its first 6 seasons! Jeez. People LOVE that overweight trailer trash woman!
Now, I'm not saying that most guys want Roseanne - just that your original points about the show are ALL incorrect. People loved her anyways.

So men must want a woman with really tall blue hair and women want a bumbling, bald yellow guy with a beer gut since The Simpsons has been on for what, 16 years now? |

Well, I was gonna say perhaps geography has something to do with it....I live in the epicentre of a large city, and am in my 30's. Most the men I know are looking for strong intelligent independant women. June wouldn't do for these guys!
But I noticed that notonline is in my city and in my age range... I guess we hang in different circles
Now that said, I am a strong independant intelligent woman, and I am not dating right now...hmmm....So much for that theory! |
