I work in construction and we take LOTS of photos. I need a photo management software that will allow me to sort images quickly based on criteria I have assigned to the images. What I am looking for is a program that will show me a thumb of the photo and have a list of user-defined items, issues, locations, subcontractors, etc that I can link to the photo. Also, I would be able to assign these to a batch of photos, say if I had taken 100 shots of one thing. Once photos had information assigned, I could view the list of images, sort them, search them, print them, export them, etc.

Does this software, or something like it, exist? If not, what would be the best way to go about creating it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...I have roughly 8,000 photos to sort...

if you have a mac, I've heard many things about Aperature.

I like Microsoft Digital Image Libary. You can assign multiple user-defined keywords by batch process and search very easily. It also has a great archive feature that will tell you which CD you burned the photo to if it isn't still on your hard drive. You can sort them by number of stars, by flags, etc. It works quite well for me!

Try iMatch - it allows for categorisation and sub-categorisation not just the simple keywording. I have around 55,000 images indexed using this tool.

Doesn't photoshop Elements do this?

I am a Thumbsplus user and have been for years. Nonetheless, I'm taking a fresh look at all the software, especially relating to "off-line" use.

I am, over the course of the next two weeks, writing up my experiences in this thread:

Reviews of Software--Image Cataloging andDatabases

You can do the same and contribute, just follow, or actively participate there!

Cerious/Thumbsplus, by the way, is having a 1/2 price sale (per an email I got earlier this week).

I use iMatch also for cataloging my photos, but one really cannot beat Photo Mechanic for it's simplicity and easy of use for 1)uploading files from the memory cards, 2)quick editing out of the duds and 3)adding location, copyright, and photographer information to either a single or a batch of photos. (Photo Mechanic can perform steps 1 and 3 simultaneously!) Also allows you to 1)categorize by user defined classes - ie high, medium, low priority or whatever, and 2) enter keywords for an individual or batch of photos.

I recently started using Photo Mechanic to quickly add titles to a folder full of images. Beats opening each image in Photoshop, entering the title, then saving the file. Very helpful when getting ready to generate web photo galleries. Many times I forget to or cannot think of a title when processing the individual photo.

The user interface is very friendly and easy to use. The software runs really fast. It's pricey (US $150), but I think well worth it over the long run.

Just started using Adobe Bridge.
Looks like it fits the bill on what you are after

I've tried them all and I use Extensis Portfolio. It's the most powerful one I am aware of.

Well I just did my first DVD index using that. It was so slow! And it didn't thumbnail any of my CR2s. (see my first test in the thread I pointed to below).

Is there a trick?

iView MediaPro

Sounds like a perfect fit for what you are trying to do. Extensis Portfolio fits in this space as well, but it's more expensive.
