A couple shots I've entered in recent challenges have actually been exposure tests for shots I've done on 120 film. Now that I've got the film photos developed, I printed them in the color darkroom and scanned them..I was wondering which versions you preferred more? The second image was a portrait I was pretty happy about, but I don't think people were feelin it too much.

Compare: Happy Feet

Compare: Girl with Flower

I would really appreciate any thoughts. I definitely think a lot more before pressing the shutter for my film shots, but when you shoot so many frames of digital sometimes you are bound to get a better shot there.

Though they are different photos and it is hard to compare I like the film the best :)

I prefer the film versions, especially 'Girl with flower'

Digital...

You can't really compare though as they are completely different photos.
If you took exactly the same shot IE - took it with the digi, then quickly picked up the Film and shot again, then it would be more comparable (same light conditions etc).

The film picture of the flower girl has loads of dust in the image - Is that from the camera or the scanner!?!?!?

I think that the time you took in developing the film images, you should invest in post processing the digitl images also for a good comparison. I think you could create very similar images.

In the Happy feet shot, I prefer the film. They are similar photos, but I think that the same outcome could have been done with the digital if time was spent. I think the film was captured better as the guy jumping is blocking out some of the harsh light that is visible in the digital shot.

The other 2 shots are too different to compare really. I actually really like the digital shot. Its nice a moody. But thats my preference over the subject matter, not the photo.

The digital shots look very much like early test shots for the more completely realised film shots.

Its very difficult to compare as the shots are different. Digital shots dont' seem to have been post procesed. You should edit these too to get a fair comparison

they were post processed, actualy a fair amount, but I try to make that not be evident. I know the shots are different, I guess I just wonder which people prefer, regardless of the medium I shot it on.

thanks for feedback so far!

Film just has that special feel to it. Digital is great, but I love film.

I much prefer the digital of the first for lack of the head. I prefer the film of the second although I like them both.

thanks everyone, and one last bump.

Film. I am having a VERY VERY VERY large confidence failing moving over to digital, wich is one of the reasons I joined this group. Film it was purely intuitive. I took great shots because I just KNEW what to do. Digital - the feel is completely different, it behaves so differently.

Like this shot:
This is the best I could do in Digital. On FILM though, it was PERFECT.

Some days I feel like kicking and screaming. I do much better with my 3o year old camera than my hard earned and worked for D70.

In both shots, I like the film versions better. But the others are right, they're too different to compare.

I just like the color quality of the two film ones better is all. If you could make the colors as vivid in either of the others...

Also, the headless sun one, the extra dynamic range actually seems to detract from the picture because you lose the subject in all the extra detail it seems. my 2c

I prefer the film shots for both, however I don't think it has anything to do with the medium. I think I just liked the composition and colors better (which could be replicated with digital).

I tend to shoot a lot of photos with digital (because each frame is free!) but I have a hard time deleting even crappy photos (because I'm a packrat), so I easily waste storage space. I have recently decided to train myself to think more, shoot less. I have heard many film photographers say that they think more with film thus take better photos with film. So really all you need is a slight modification of your habits (always act as though you are shooting with film) and you get to take sweet pictures in digital and film media!

I agree with the majority of the comments here, that it is hard to compare because they are different shots entirely. However, with regards to the question in general, I totally prefer digital. I guess because I am really into this whole "digital age". Everything is moving that way. Digital photography gives you much more freedom, being that a large amount of viewing of your photos will be on a computer somewhere. And you have the ability to do all of your own processing for much less that it would be to build your own darkroom, buy supplies, and learn the differences in all of the chemicals, paper, etc.

The film looks better, but as you have been told they are not the same photo's. I like the blue sky and less clouds also no sun glare on the first one. The second one you have much more light in the film and the face is covered in the second digital shot. You really need two identical shots, and I doubt we would see any difference when finished

the digital is darker for the portrait yeah, because I did that in photoshop...i just wanted that feel.

but to be honest I have never got as good of colors with digital as I can with film. Even with photoshop, of which I have a good amount of experience with, and the professional lenses...

I dunno but yeah I think I'm going backwards, the more I shoot film the more I prefer it, cept for my journalism work where time is an issue.
