I will have my D70 by this weekend!

I am so excited.

So what do I to start out. I'm not talking what should I have, but what are do I really NEED to get with it? I'm getting it as a kit at Best Buy. It comes with a 18-70mm DX lens. I'm not sure how much memory it is coming with because I forgot to write that down. How much memory should I have to start?

Wooohoooo, and this weekend is supposed to be nice too will be a great oppurtunity to try out the new camera!

You should get AT LEAST a gig to start. Go with a good card...something that is high speed. More expensive is better -- the d70 really speeds up with the faster cards.

Learn your camera, and what you're into before you decide on another lens though...see if you're always wanting more distance, or if you're always wanting wider, or macro, etc...Whatever lens you do decide on, go top of the line, even if it means saving up for a while longer...it's worth it.

You'll probably want a flash -- the sb600 seems good -- you can use it off-camera or on, and does the job very good.

A backup battery isn't a necessity -- I get around 600-700 shots per charge. I have a backup just because I like to drain mine all the way, then swap it out, and recharge the other one then store it till that one's drained also...that's about it really, until you get familiar with the camera, and see what else it is that fits into your style.

I might go with two 512's instead of one card that's a gig. That way, if your card becomes corrupted or you leave it in the computer by accident (almost all of us have done it at least once), you'll have a backup in your camera bag.

dont get your memory at best buy, their memory prices are about the higest around.

I am probably going to get the memory at Best Buy because I have the awards card. I'll basically get money back eventually and use it towards something else- for the camera more then likely.

SO is the memory that comes with the camera enough for just starting out or is it something I'm going to need right away?

I'm all new to this. My lil point and shoot has an extra memory card- i can basically store 160 pics on the camera at once between the internal memory and the added. I know an SLR is a lot different.

I'll take all the help I can get so the saleman at the store doesn't get me lol.

Memory does NOT come with this camera, unless the store is offering something special. It does come with a battery, charger, software, cables and manual. I picked up a second battery since I like to use all the juice and want to be able to go again. The battery will last through 4-6 hours of shooting usually and takes about 2 hours to charge.

Nikon is also very specific about the memory they support/recommend. I know they specify Lexar 80x and another brand. When shooting RAW, I get just under 200 shots on a 1 gig card.

I have a 7mp camera (believe the D70 is 6mp) and my file sizes are around 3mb shot at highest jpg quality, depending on complexity of subject. RAW files take up much more room. I use two 512mb's and a leftover 256mb and have rarely run out of card space - only when shooting sports in burst mode for an extended period of time. I would expect that you would be able to get about 180-200 images on a 512mb card, and still not run out of battery during your shoot.

Now that you have a DSLR, you'll probably increase your shots per shoot from what you were doing before. You don't mention what size card you have now, but I would think that you could "get by" with even a 256mb in the beginning as long as you were not shooting in RAW. You can always add more cards to your equipment package later.

Nikon recommends Lexar, but I've used Sandisk with my Nikons as well with no problems whatsoever. Sandisk is a bit less expensive than Lexar and they stand behind their cards 100%.

I don't have a card yet lol- I don't even have the camera yet. I'm going shopping this weekend. that's why I'm asking ahead of time.

I just found out though that Best Buy does not have the D70 in the store but it's on sale online. I checked at Circuitcity.com and it's actually cheaper there. Hopefully I can get a hold of my friend and maybe have her get my the gift card for circuit city instead.

This is just nuts lol. I feel like I'm buying a car here!~

Costco offer 1 GB cards at a fair price. You might want to check them out. Also, have you checked B&H for the D70 with kit lens? If you are not buying it direct from a store you might want to check them out as they have reputable and fast service.

Just a thought,

save yourself some money and get a d70, which with firmware upgrades from Nikon is essentially the same camera.

This one from B&H comes with a 1bg Lexar 80x card, and is $1,119. The Best buy D70s is $1,199 w/o a card. Shipping only adds $16 for 3-day.

With 1gb memory card being about $100, you save $180. With the mail in rebates right now at B&H, you save $300. Then you can save that for a 70-200 lens, another flash card, or nice camera bag.

My friend is sending me a gift card for best buy so i don't have the option to shop somewhere else really.

Plus I have an awards card for Best Buy and will earn so many points and use them later on. I bought my point and shoot with my awards points from buying our computer- well 80 dollars worth of points anyways.

If you can got to a brick and mortar store that does a lot of online you can get the best of both worlds, test driving AND low prices :-D

I buy my gear at Penn Camera in Washington D.C. (The Tysons Corner Branch has all the cool toys) They have internet pricing in the store and all the people to bug to try stuff out AND used stuff to drool over too :-)

I have to drive about 3-1/2 hours to get there but its worth it I think.

Enjoy the D70. I say a good camera is good period, regardless of brand or price (for the most part). And the D70 is a good camera and won't let you down. I just say shoot tons and tons of subjects and styles until you improve. That is what helped me most. Just trying.
