Ok, English isn't my first language. Sometimes I really don't understand CHIT ;-) (or sh*t) what you guys are typing.
I got a comment about my entry that said: "outside the box".
allright, the rest of the comment was verry positive, so it's for sure being "outside the box" is a good thing. but what does it mean? |

Quick search brought this up for you: Puzzle
It's the puzzle I was looking for--the origin of the phrase in popular culture. In order to solve it, you have to think outside of normal conventions...in this case, literally, outside of the box your mind wants to put things into. |

There is a box provided for the challenge description. If your entry fits the challenge description perfectly, you are within the box. If not, you are outside the box! LOL.

"Outside the Box" usually refers that you are trying something different that no one else thought of.
Pretty much a generic term for: artsy, different take on the topic, etc. Really a neutral comment, but since the other parts were positive then it leans toward the positive nature of the shot.

If you were to look it up in the dictionary, you'd see this guy's photo in the definition. :-) He is the king of "outside the box" thinking in my opinion. |

If I were you I'd wait until after the voting was finished and then PM the commenter, thanking them for commenting, and ask for an explanation of what they meant by it. Get the goods from the horses mouth.

I think on this site "outside the box" seems to mean I'm not scoring very well. |

Shannon (scalvert) is one of my long-time favorites too, but IMO, rather than thinking outside the box, Shannon has that incredible knack to nail the challenge in such a head-on, extremely creative way, that he makes you think "wow, that's what this challenge was all about." I always think I could shoot what Shannon shoots, I just can't think of the ideas that Shannon thinks of. |

One of my recent forays outside the box. This was for the "dairy" challenge. I liked the white mask, and wanted to almost completely submerge it in milk for an otherworldly feel. I ended up not using quite as much milk, but really liked the result:
It finished with a 5.1, at the 60th %ile, but got 5 favorites. I like the image and still do, but it clearly didn't meet the challenge for many voters. |

I've been talking to a friend about this yesterday. I showed her some winners from past challenges. She thought these photos were incredible, but also a little common. These photos will attract a very wide public, which will result in better & higher scores.
Artsi-fartsi photos probably don't attract a lot of people, so the score on a photo outside the box will be a lot lower.
I think Strangeghost has a point: the faves are much more important then your score. That probably really tells you, you've made a great photo. |

I wasn't a member then, but maybe if the title had been "Mask in Milk" it might have scored higher. |

When I was in kindergarten, I used to get criticized for coloring "outside the box"
On a related note: When "outside the box" becomes so mainstream, being mainstream automatically becomes "outside the box" - correct?
...why does it have to be a "box" anyway? Why not a can? or a Cookie Jar? Yeah, a cookie jar. |

I see you had to get out of your box so you could photograph your box.

...those of you who ride with you in said box on occasion wish you could think even FURTHER outside the box...or at least sing further outside. ;)
