OK, feeling dumb here.
Is this the new math? Anyone try this before?
Anyone have any explanation? Probaly so simple I missing it.

Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT Use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add
Another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000.
Now add 10. What is the total?

The correct answer is actually 4100.

Don't believe it? Check with your calculator!

Ok!!! I have had a couple of beers here! I came up with 5000 a couple of times. So the question is???? Should I drink a few more beers or just go to sleep? Now that is the question?

You need to be drinking to come up with 5000. For some reason when you look at it and add it up you count the small numbers (which come up with 100) you in you mind translate it to be 1000. the total then is 5000 rather than 4100. I did it two times before I actually looked at the numbers. HAVE ANOTHER DRINK!

You'll have to ask Alex (Trebek that is).

I'll keep it in the sauna - hot and humid just like your tropical wonderland. It'll be just like home, honest.

I actually ended up with 2100 because I started by TAKING 1000 as stated instead of just starting with 1000! But then again, I'm dumb! :p

I got 4100 - but this is the second time I've seen this math "problem". :) (First time, I got 5000.)

I'd have a real problem if I got 5000 this time, too!

4100. But I guess the 'trick' is being able to do arithmetic.

I can't believe you'd need to check with a calculator - don't people get taught in school any more ?

Unfortunately not. My nephew (recent HS grad) was STRONGLY encouraged to use a calc in his HS math class. There was even a section in their book on the calculator.

I, and then my dad, tried to explain to him that math is much faster and easier when done in the head or on paper.

My niece is now taking HS math. Same gig - NEED the calc, straight from the teacher's mouth.

:(
