sure, why not? our "job" as photographers is to take the everyday and turn it into art.

Nice shots, especially the first one. You're right, you can find a shot anywhere. |

Nice shots....
great photos are often found or stumbled upon rather than set up.
My wife told me a story of a National Geographic photographer who was assigned to shoot some lush blue bonnet fields somewhere in Texas, this was long ago.
Well when he got to the assignment area the field was lacking his subject, (no bluebonnets, field had been mowed or something) skies were nasty poor lighting, rainy. Most people would have hauled the camera back to the car and left.
Not him, he went for a little walk and spent some time looking around. He did manage to find one lonely and pathetic looking blue bonnet. he snapped a few pics and of course they were beautiful. and he was able to do the story with just that one bluebonnett

An artist has a different way of looking at things. They move through the world wearing a different pair of glasses. They see the art in the normal things, and the potential in the special things. They view the world as a composition, waiting to be captured.
;) you can quote me! heheee

Very nice, Phillip. I, too, prefer the first. You captured the "visual line" perfectly. :) I also really like the high contrast of the yellow against the black.
I remember once reading an article, perhaps it was an interview, in which a famous photographer said that there is a photo in every single thing you look at. Wish I could remember who the photographer was. But I really like that idea. Every so often I think of it and try to see something in whatever I happen to glance at. (I almost never have a camera on me when I remember it, so I just practice looking.) I must admit, the clutter before me on my desk presents a huge challenge for me in seeing anything photograph-able in it!

Great shots man. I also like the first one better. It really pays to bring your camera with you all the time. I brought my camera to the grocery store for the first time today. Of course, I got kicked out pretty quick and had to go to a second store to get my shopping done, but it was worth it. Here are a few shots from the experience:

I noticed you're in NY. Where is this grocery store with a bathroom and HUGE isles???
I'm in Brooklyn, and in the stores around here, I'm lucky if I can fit the shopping cart down the isle without bumping into someone/something! (Nevermind have use of a public bathroom...)

Why did they kick you out? Did someone complain? I take my camera into Wegmans here all the time and never have a problem
The problem I run into is at school when I go to pick up the kids. Most of the kids know me from being the Junior Achievement Volunteer but I don't take pictures of them usually, I look for other things, the way the buses line up, the way the sun hits the benches, stuff like that but every single freaking time I have brought my camera to the school the principal comes over and questions me and asks me if I have permission to photograph the kids. I always tell her, "I don't need it since I'm not photographing them."
She approaches me one more time when I have my camera I'm going to start snapping shots of the kids just to tick her off! She's only been there a couple of years now and is NOTHING like the previous principal.

Sheesh, after the second time you think she would have figured it out |

These were taken at a Shoprite across the street from the gigantic Palisades Mall in West Nyack NY.
The general consesus in these parts is that photography is evil and somehow directly linked to terrorism, identity theft, and child pornography. I was immediately told that I couldn't take photos and then when they caught me sneaking more shots the security politely escorted me out. I suppose it's private property or something. I wasn't given a reason and I was just glad to get out without a major hassle with a few shots I liked.
I generally shoot candid people shots just to piss them off. It's my right. If you don't want me to take your photo YOU must have something to hide. If that's the case -- stay HOME! :) |

Ah... I think for some reason, seeing your photo of that man looking warily at you, I thought you might be in NYC! But I'm not surprised that there's a huge Shoprite across from the gigantic mall. That's a great mall. I wish it were closer to Brooklyn!
It's interesting where you can and can't take pictures sometimes. For example, long before 9/11, you were not allowed to take pictures or shoot video in the subway. Of course, people still did it, but I also heard from friends of mine about being stopped by cops and MTA employees. I wonder if even back then they didn't allow it for fear of terrorism or some other reason.

JPR that is freaking hilarioius! I can just see you snapping photos and being escorted out. I suspect the reason they discourage this sort of thing is because anything you might capture could be used against them in a court of law. Paranoia.
and Covering their own Asses. LOL The pics are hilarious though. Good fun. |
