It was not until last week that I became aware of this site and only then because one of my x-students informed of it's exsistance. I have been teaching photography for 15+ years and have critiqued thousands of photographs by my students. I am willing to critique anyone's work, if they want a true evalutation. I will not flatter peoples egos unless it is deserved. Nor will I insult you. Education is what I do and I am willing to share my talents with those who are truely interested. I will from time to time enter a challenge and will accept any and all critiques for that is how we all learn. Now, for all those who have work in this weeks challenge, take a look at your photo...Then ask yourself could this have been taken by a five year old who points and shoots. To become an accomplished photographer you need to be able to "see" and then compose a photograph that draws a viewer attention. Alas, I rattle on. So fear not what I say, but learn, then apply it to your next challenge. JG

please feel free to critique any of the photos in the link you see in my sig (that have me listed as the photographer... i do edits and stuff for friends occasionally). i'm always interested to hear opinions beyond the kind i get here.

but keep something in mind. most of the stuff that people on here complain about is a combination of two things: crappy cameras, and artistic decision.

...and any five year old with a point and shoot could have taken just about everything there. :D

I would like a commentary on my dpchallenge entries if you have time, some of my favorites have not been the highest scoring. You can click on my name to see them. thanks.

Or the ones in my pbase gallery, although there are a lot of them. I need to clean house and weed out the mediocre ones and the family pics I put on for friends and family to download.

Teachme53, I have two entries currently being voted on. Next week, I would be grateful for your critique on either or both.

Do you have a gallery that we can look at your work? I think it would be good if you showed us some of your images so we can see what your interpretation of good is.

Thanks

Dave

Welcome to DPC, teachme53!

Most of us here are looking to learn more about photography and to improve our skills.

You might want to join the Critique Club. As a member of the Critique Club we critique images submitted to the challenges where the submitter has requested a critique by using the check-box on the submission page. The Critique Club is fairly new and is lead by John Setzler (user name: jmsetzler) who is also a member of the site council. Many of us in the Critique Club are new at critiquing and have had discussions on how to critique an image, another skill we are trying to improve upon.

Again, welcome to DPC!

Teachme53,

I don't want to sound smug, or unappreciative, or anything like that, but I might suggest that it would be a better approach to become "established" here before jumping in to claim superiority right off the bat.

I'm suggesting that you try your hand at the challenges and earn the respect of the participants here first... then your credentials will speak for themselves.

I guess the reason I was taken aback by your initial post is that I have seen similar personalities emerge in the past. I recall one guy in the fall who posted a picture and then got all upset with the fact that it didn't do well, considering he is a "professional" with his own studio, and has been doing this for 20 years, blah blah blah. The truth of the matter is that, to the eyes of those who vote on the site, his shot wasn't anything special.

However, he made it clear that his shot WAS a great shot, that it met the challenge perfectly, and that we were all nuts for voting poorly for it. Shame on us.

Well, this is a little different venue for most people. This is an opportunity for a wide variety of people with a wide variety of skills to see how their shots will fare. Most importantly, the people who benefit most from this site are those who A: Want to learn; and B: Realize that the responses to their photos are coming from such a wide variety of tastes, skills, etc.

Having participated in the site for several months and visiting it many times a day, I have come to learn which critques I will take to heart, and which ones to take with a grain of salt.

I guess my main sticking point in your note is that you're offering to provide a "true evaluation" of photos for people. Well, there is no such thing. A great photo to one person may simply stink in the eyes of someone else. I do look forward to your evaluations, honestly, but please don't put yourself on a pedestal right off the bat... :)

PS -- There are indeed a few kids here not much older than 5 who DO participate in the site... and oftentimes they do quite well, and are eager to learn...

Ditto. Entries and evaluations.
This photo WAS submitted by a 5-year old, and earned a 5.4 score in the Negative Space Challenge.

I always want critiques, be it from a photography teacher, a friend, or a 5 year old. Please feel free to look mine over. Thanks.

Maybe you would be interested in participating in our Critique Club? We are on holiday break at the moment but we will be craking things up again on Monday :)

I can tell you achiral that he's not... because he was my highschool photography teacher. I'm the one who told him about this site, and maybe people shouldn't attack him right away, as we don't exactly want to drive new and obviously excited members from the site right away. Teachme53 taught my basis of photography... and I think he was just trying to offer some guidance! Hi JG... glad you joined the site! Welcome and hope you enjoy!

I´m a teacher myself. As a teacher you meet new people every day. Therefore it´s important for you to have a humble way of meeting these new persons. If you have that you will seldom be attacked the way it happened here. Welcome teachme53 and take it easy. I think you mean well.

Of course anyone is welcome.. start voting and put your evaluations and critiques on the current challenge. :0)

Yikes, you are far too scary for me. Please, stay away from my photos. My ego is already damaged beyond repair from the last few challenges. I do not think that I need your GI Joe, take-no-prisoners, approach shovelled upon me as well. Others seem rather happy to have you help them, so go for it.

I have enrolled in a local university photography course (Ryerson) here in Toronto, so I suspect that come the spring, I will either be a tower of photographic power with Blue Ribbons galore, or more likely, a whimpering, sad, broken, and disenchanted 5-year old ready to play with my crayons. Much like I am now. So, let me get through school first. Hopefully, I will pass and learn something, then, I hope to be strong enough to win that praise that you mentioned.

Welcome to DPC, just the same.

I'm up for any straightforward un-sugarcoated critiques that are available, so long as they are detailed and specific about what formed the opinions being presented. I have no illusions about being a great photographer waiting to be broken down, just a desire to become a better one.

Welcome. = )

Welcome aboard teachme53... I think you'll find that most folks here welcome honest opinions.
01/02/2003 05:02:47 PM · #21
"Professional" opinions would be fantastic here. I do hope they are less insulting and more constructive and informative than "this looks like a 5 year old took it with a point and shoot".
