Another treat in the Phillipines was BBQ dog meat on a stick.
Sold by road side vendors and would often be found where the Jeepnies would stop. Was actually pretty good too. Rule of thumb there was if the locals didn't eat any, I didn't either.

You must have had a bad batch, it IS delicious if cooked right. We make it from time to time. Feijoada..

Subic Bay actually, back in the early 80's while my ship was there undergoing repairs.

I drank some horse milk in Russia, I didn't like it too much. I think they put some alcohol in it :) I also had horse salami there. I ate kangaroo meat in Australia, it was also okay.

The worst thing I ever ate is something they have here in the north of Germany called Toettchen. It is a kind of ragout made with all the parts of a cow/or pig (I don't know what) which are not sold as meat. Innerds, brain, intenstines etc, all mixed together with onions and vinegar. Yuk!

Olongapo :) Sweet. There are also the local delicasies such as "esau" (chicken intestines), "betamax" (little solid pigs blood cut to resemble a beta tape), chicken heads, chicken feet, etc.

Think a couple of those are beyond me, but have had rattlesnake; octopus; chocolate covered ants, bees, caterpillars, grasshoppers; squid; worms made into cake (was not that bad); lots of other stuff I have tried, the only one I absolutely disliked/hated was jellyfish (served in a nice oriental restaurant, btw). That was terrible!!

I'm in Newfoundland and I can remember my mother pressing tongue to serve with cold plates. I've never eaten it but it was definitely gross to look at. She'd put it in a bowl, put a plate over it, place it on the kitchen counter and pile all kinds of things on top so it would stick under the kitchen cupboards and press it that way. Just a little weird!

Half-hatched chicken egg. A fifteen or sixteen day old fertilized chicken egg, complete with partially formed feathers, feet, eyeballs, and blood vessels showing through the translucent skin of the chick.

Cow stomach soup In Mexico as some little road side stand. Looking for a taco stand, but couldn't find one. So we decided to try the stuff that looked like chicken soup. I knew it wasn't going to end well when we walked up and the guy beind the counter and his customers started chuckling at us.

That's "Menudo" and as far as I'm concerned it's very tasty if done properly.

I'm suprised at people grossing out on beef tongue, and doubly surprised that nobody has mentioned it's a traditionalk delicatessan meat in Jewish delis. I can't imagine why anyonw would think tongue is gross; it's a nice, lean muscle, just another muscle, very fine-tectured and supple.

I once was invited to a Chinese banquet in a "back room" at a great Chinese restaurant, and one of the dishes involved placing a large pot of simmering broth in the center of the table, whereipon the chef came out with like a 3-foot long live snake, stuck the tail under his foot and stretched it out holding the head, made a quick incision around the "neck" and then skinned the snake live. He grabbed his cleavewr and whacked it into sections still live and tossed those into the pot. We were eating the snake 5 minutes later.

Wasn't that a band in the early 80's?

Edit:
Yep.... thought so

When I was in Thailand we had a coconut based soup (which I already don't like) with big chunks of congealed goose blood.

I grew up taking cow tongue sandwiches to school. I still think tongue makes the best cold cuts. Just add a dash of salt. mmmmmmmmm

Of course my grandma made it and she was an amazing cook. I've never tried it on my own. I've heard that you need to make sure to pull the tastebuds off (it comes off like a skin) because they'll make you sick.

I'm amazed no one has mentioned vegemite... That has to be some of the nastiest stuff on the face of the earth (and I've eaten some pretty gross stuff growing up in Purgatory Holler, lemme tell ya).

I understand that if you grew up eating it, you love it... but it is definitely a taste that is unique! (Reminds me a little bit of poi.)

Octopus (tako) sushimi is my fav.

I once ate a strawberry pop tart while taking photos of a guy picking the remains of a pilot from the airplanes instrument panel and gauges.

Does that count?

The worst food I've ever eaten was "natto" in Japan. It's basically soy beans that are fermented to the point where they become really slimy and smell like vomit. It's actually really healthy and my daughters love it, but I have to leave the room when they eat it.

At one Japanese party, the people I was with apparently wanted to play "let's gross out the foreigner," so they ordered the most freakish food they could find. It consisted of:

*Raw horse meat - not bad with sesame sauce
*Boiled chicken stomachs - bad
*Barbecued shrimp shells - bad
*The still-moving tentacle of an octopus - yummy, but gross. It suctions onto your mouth.
*A bunch of little white fish that you pour live into soy sauce then drink - gross, very salty
*A whole sea bream that is carved live on the table and flayed out to eat while still squirming - yummy, but gross.
*And for dessert, bees and grasshoppers soaked in syrup - Sweet, but disturbing.

In conclusion, only go out to eat in Japan with people you trust.
