Our community based play, cast of over 80 Harlan countians is opening tonight. I have never had stage fright before, but i am feeling it now.

Community plays are just that, made by a community. A few years back, students from our local college started collecting an oral history of people that live in our county. Others collected or produced visual histories via photography. We are an old coal mining town, we are dry, we live in the mountains and valleys of SE rural KY. (Has anyone see the film Harlan County, USA re: the civil disrest regarding union and non union coal mining. Thats Us.) Being dry, bootlegging and alcoholism is a prodominant here. Far more prodominate is the misuse of perscprition narcotics and other pharmaceuticals. Particulary Oxycotin. We are also a family. We have a walmart ;) (if you have ever lived in rural america, you'll understand). We have AMAZING musical and artistic talent in this area. Phenominal. The stories and images which were collected told all of all of these things. And much more.

Everything collected was art. And has been presently thusly. TOnight opens the play - a collage of stories from the community, acted by people from the community. Sounnds kinda humdrum, i know. But it is far from a sundayschool recital. There is more info here on our stage crew, director etc.

Saturday we unveil the tile mosaic mural which also includes tales from Harlan flowing across the mountians. Also opening saturday is the photography exhibit, and an audio gallery of oral histories.

Anyways... i am involved in many aspects of the project, including leading all 80 people in the movement in the play and a smattering of different characters. So... someone wish me a broken leg, eh? ;)
