611.39 - I've been up and down all day but back up to the 6's.
I think that interpreting what the challenge means to YOU is totally unfair to the artist whose representation it is. NO? I am far from fundamentally religious, but I can most certainly see how a church can make you feel good. Maybe it has memories. Maybe it represents an ancestor who was buried there, or a grandfather who was a minister in a small church. I just don't get it. In this challenge, like troberge, I am looking at the photo. This is definitely not specific like complementary colors or high contrast. This is what makes the PHOTOGRAPHER feel good about his life and him/herself. If it is an outstanding photo of a shoe horn, then vote it high, because maybe the photographer only has one foot now, and lost his other in a boating accident and that shoe horn reminds him of better days and that makes him feel good!!!

See, I'm the other way - I think if you need the title or an essay to explain, you didn't show celebration to your audience, just yourself.

" Devote your photographic energies to making us feel good about ourselves and our lives."
Hmmmm - maybe we interpret the definition of the challenge differently. That's what makes the world go round.

I just finished voting for celebration and thought there were many wonderful photographs. For this particular challenge I saw one, maybe two tops, that for the life of me I couldn't fit into "celebration" but I put that down to my ignorance.
I will say that voting in this challenge has raised considerably my voting average. |

I guess we will agree to disagree. I feel a high scoring photo in this challenge should be one that makes the VIEWER feel good about his life and him/herself.
If you are taking a photo for yourself you need to please only yourself. Once the photo is been taken for someone else to appreciate their taste and judgement is also very important, in fact more than the photographer's. If you take a photo that only you can link to the challenge you shouldn't expect other people to vote it high....
Presumably most people enter a photo they consider worthy of a ten. If so then by your arguement I should give every photo a ten... who am I to judge the quality? |

I think if the photo is one that moves the photographer, then it is more apt to move others who view it. But like any other form of art (ie: music, paintings, sculpture, etc), it is totally subjective. It truly is in the eye of the beholder ;o)

I disagree. Jutilda's views are on the mark. I think photographers should take photos that pleases their own personal thoughts and ideas. Where's the pleasure in taking photos when you try to please others?
Indeed most people try to enter a photo they consider worthy of a ten but I think that way of thinking will limit your capability of really taking a good photo. One great comment I received is from mycellium and he says and I quote:
My suggestion: keep this, the sociological background of DPC scores, in mind when you're choosing what to submit. Think about what it takes to get a voter to click "6" instead of "5." Look at the images that score close to 6, and see what's done differently there.
Art is truly a subjective matter I suppose :) |
